The Public Works Authority (Ashghal) in Doha, Qatar, recently announced the completion of development and improvement works on part of Al-Sailiya Road. The project, part of the Road Improvement Works Outside Greater Doha Areas – Phase 7, involved expanding the road from two to three lanes in each direction and developing some link roads. Eng. Hassan Al Naama, Project Engineer at Ashghal, highlighted the significance of the project’s location, as Al Sailiya Road serves the entire area and provides access to various neighborhoods such as Rawdat Abal Heeran, Al Mearad, and Masaken Barwa Al Sailiya. Additionally, the road connects to main roads like Al-Waab Road and Al-Majd Road, improving overall connectivity in the region.
The total road works implemented on Al-Sailiya Road spanned 4.5km, including the expansion of lanes and the creation of a median island to regulate traffic flow and enhance safety. The project also involved developing pedestrian and bicycle paths, creating parking spaces, installing lighting systems, ITS lines, and monitoring cameras. Furthermore, road signs, ground markings, asphalt layer rehabilitation, and beautification works were completed to improve the overall infrastructure of the area. Additionally, a surface water and rainwater drainage network, drainage network, potable water network, TSE irrigation lines, house connections, and protection of existing service lines were developed as part of the project.
In a nod to supporting local manufacturers and the Ta’heel initiative launched in 2017, Ashghal relied heavily on local materials and manufacturers for the project. Local Qatari sources were utilized to supply materials such as sewage pipes, surface water drainage components, rainwater drainage elements, lighting poles, and lamps. This commitment to sourcing materials locally resulted in nearly 70% of the project’s work being supported by the local component. By prioritizing local resources, Ashghal not only boosts the economy but also ensures quality materials and sustainable development practices in the region.
The completion of the development and improvement works on Al-Sailiya Road represents a significant step towards enhancing transportation infrastructure in the area and improving connectivity for residents. With increased road capacity, improved traffic flow regulation, and enhanced safety measures, the project aims to streamline daily commutes and facilitate access to key destinations within the region. The inclusion of pedestrian and bicycle paths, parking spaces, and infrastructure for water drainage and irrigation reflects a comprehensive approach to urban development that prioritizes the needs of the community and promotes sustainable practices.
As the project engineer noted, Al Sailiya Road plays a crucial role in connecting various neighborhoods and main roads, making it a central artery for transportation in the area. By expanding the road and implementing essential infrastructure improvements, Ashghal is not only addressing immediate traffic concerns but also laying the groundwork for future growth and development in the region. The reliance on local materials and manufacturers further underscores Ashghal’s commitment to supporting the local economy and fostering a sustainable approach to infrastructure development. With projects like the Al-Sailiya Road improvements, Ashghal continues to demonstrate its dedication to enhancing the quality of life for residents and ensuring efficient, safe, and well-maintained infrastructure for all.
