The Ministry of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology in Muscat is collaborating with the National Centre for Statistics and Information (NCSI) to conduct a project that aims to measure the contribution of the digital economy to Oman’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP). The project, which will be carried out until May 2025, specifically focuses on assessing the added value generated by the communications and information technology sector, as well as activities of financial and insurance services that are solely provided through digital means. This initiative is geared towards gaining a better understanding of the impact of digitalization on the country’s economic landscape.

With the target segment comprising approximately 1,300 establishments across all governorates of Oman, the survey will encompass businesses of varying sizes within the communications and information technology sector, including large, medium, small, and micro enterprises. Additionally, it will also encompass activities related to financial and insurance services that are conducted digitally. The survey will primarily focus on gathering data from these establishments during the year 2023, serving as the core reference point for evaluating the digital economy’s contribution to the country’s GDP.

By shedding light on the role played by the digital economy in Oman’s overall economic performance, this project seeks to provide valuable insights that can inform policymaking and strategic decision-making processes. Understanding the added value generated by the communications and information technology sector, as well as digital financial and insurance services, can help in identifying growth opportunities, enhancing competitiveness, and fostering innovation within these key sectors. Through the systematic collection and analysis of relevant data, the project aims to paint a comprehensive picture of the digital economy’s impact on Oman’s GDP.

The implementation of this project underscores the government’s commitment to harnessing the potential of digital technologies to drive economic growth and development. By evaluating the contribution of digitalization to key sectors such as communications, information technology, finance, and insurance, policymakers and stakeholders will be better equipped to leverage digital tools and platforms for accelerating economic progress. Moreover, the project’s focus on measuring the added value created by digital activities highlights the importance of fostering a conducive environment for digital innovation and entrepreneurship in Oman.

As the survey progresses, it will be essential to ensure the active participation of the target establishments in providing accurate and reliable data. This collaborative effort between the government, NCSI, and the private sector will be crucial for capturing a comprehensive view of the digital economy’s impact. By engaging with businesses of all sizes operating in the communications, information technology, financial, and insurance sectors, the project can generate valuable insights that can drive informed decision-making and strategic planning. Ultimately, the success of this initiative will depend on the collective efforts of all stakeholders involved in advancing Oman’s digital economy.

In conclusion, the project to survey the contribution of the digital economy to Oman’s GDP represents a significant step towards understanding and harnessing the potential of digital technologies for economic growth. By measuring the added value generated by the communications and information technology sector, as well as digital financial and insurance services, this initiative aims to inform policy decisions, spur innovation, and drive competitiveness. Through collaborative efforts between the government, NCSI, and private sector establishments, the project seeks to paint a holistic picture of the digital economy’s impact on Oman’s economic landscape. As the survey progresses, it will be pivotal to ensure the active participation and cooperation of all stakeholders in capturing the full extent of the digital economy’s contribution to Oman’s GDP.
