The Tiwi Al Obaila site in the wilayat of Mahda, Al Buraimi Governorate, was once an important location for the mining of copper ore in Oman. Copper ore extracted from the mines was filtered and smelted in furnaces to produce copper alloys. The site is believed to date back between the 9th to the 15th century, with evidence of a village or seasonal workshop where people gathered for the production of copper. However, there is no evidence of permanent settlement of people at the site.

According to Humaid bin Rashid Al Zaidi, Director of the Heritage and Tourism Department in Al Buraimi Governorate, the Tiwi Al Obaila site boasts 16 furnaces of different sizes. There are still remnants of copper slag on the inner surfaces of the furnaces, as well as remains of bronze – indicating that the site was used for a prolonged period of time. The presence of these furnaces is evidence of the production of copper in ancient Oman, as the quality of copper produced was in high demand by other countries for the manufacture of weapons and tools.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has taken steps to preserve the site by registering it as an approved heritage site and erecting warning boards for protection. Despite its historical significance, the site has become a popular destination for visitors who have an interest in exploring Oman’s rich heritage. The presence of the furnaces and remnants of copper production offer a glimpse into the ancient industry of copper mining in the region.

The Tiwi Al Obaila site is a testament to Oman’s extensive history in the production of copper and its vital role in supplying the metal to other nations for the manufacture of weapons and tools. The fact that the site dates back to the 9th to the 15th century demonstrates the enduring legacy of copper production in the region. The remains of bronze and copper slag further emphasize the long history of copper mining at the site.

Visitors to the Tiwi Al Obaila site can witness firsthand the ancient furnaces used for smelting copper ore and imagine the bustling activity that took place there centuries ago. The site provides a unique opportunity to explore Oman’s rich heritage and learn about the importance of copper mining in shaping the region’s history. With its historical significance and well-preserved remains, Tiwi Al Obaila is a must-visit destination for those interested in experiencing Oman’s cultural heritage firsthand.

In conclusion, the Tiwi Al Obaila site in Mahda, Al Buraimi Governorate, stands as a remarkable testament to Oman’s history of copper production. The site’s furnaces and remnants of copper production offer a glimpse into the ancient industry that once thrived in the region. By preserving and promoting the site as an approved heritage location, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism ensures that future generations can continue to appreciate and learn from Oman’s rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re a history enthusiast or simply curious about Oman’s past, a visit to Tiwi Al Obaila is sure to leave you with a deeper appreciation for the country’s ancient history and the role of copper mining in shaping its legacy.
