The Oman Human Rights Commission (OHRC) played a crucial role in handling 523 issues and reports in 2023, helping to settle and resolve them in coordination with relevant departments. The commission provided legal opinions and advice to parties reporting issues, guiding them on how to follow up with the authorities. Of the reports received, 65 were related to various rights categories, including civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, as well as environmental and development affairs. The OHRC offered opinions to citizens and residents on 458 of these reports, assisting them in finding resolutions in collaboration with other departments.
In addition to addressing reports, the OHRC conducted field visits to the Central Prison and detention centers to assess the conditions of inmates and detainees and study their workplace environments. The commission praised recent Royal orders granting pardon to 864 inmates, both citizens and expatriates, highlighting the positive impact on the discharged individuals and their families’ social lives. Furthermore, the OHRC acknowledged reports from international governmental and non-governmental bodies on human rights in Oman, receiving fact-finding questionnaires from United Nations special rapporteurs. The commission coordinated efforts with concerned parties to verify these reports and formulate responses accordingly.
Currently, the OHRC is working on drafting an annual report outlining its activities, efforts, issues resolved, and specialties as part of its mandate to protect and promote human rights in Oman. This demonstrates the commission’s commitment to upholding human rights standards within the Sultanate. The OHRC serves as a vital resource for individuals seeking assistance in addressing human rights concerns, offering guidance, legal opinions, and advocacy in collaboration with relevant authorities. Through its diligent efforts and initiatives, the OHRC plays a significant role in advancing human rights protections and ensuring accountability within Oman’s society.
