The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the State Audit Institution (SAI), recently participated in the Fifth Session of the Conference of the States Parties to the Arab Convention against Corruption. Held in Cairo, the conference drew international participation from Anti-Corruption Authorities, Representatives of Supreme Audit Institutions, and various organizations. The Sultanate of Oman’s delegation, led by Sheikh Ghuson bin Hilal Al-Alawi, Chairman of SAI, expressed gratitude for the opportunity to participate in the conference and highlighted Oman’s commitment to combating corruption and promoting integrity at local and regional levels. The Sultanate of Oman aims to exchange experiences with Arab States to enhance cooperation in combating corruption and implementing the obligations of the Arab Anti-Corruption Convention.

Since joining the United Nations Convention against Corruption in 2013, Oman has been dedicated to achieving the Convention’s objectives, strengthening measures to combat corruption, and promoting integrity and accountability in public affairs. The country is actively implementing the National Integrity Promotion Plan 2022 – 2030, which draws on international and regional experiences in combating corruption. Oman’s commitment to fighting corruption aligns with its focus on justice, equality, and improving the quality of life for all Arab peoples. The Sultanate of Oman will continue to support efforts to combat corruption and limit its spread in order to achieve these goals.

The Fifth Session of the Conference of States Parties to the Arab Convention against Corruption covered various key themes, including reviewing the measures taken to implement decisions from previous sessions, as well as discussing recommendations for optimal implementation of the Convention. The session also addressed issues related to establishing a mechanism for submitting draft resolutions, amending the reference framework for reviewing the Convention’s implementation, and developing a protocol for cooperation in the recovery of funds derived from corruption. Additionally, a mechanism for monitoring integrity indicators in the public sector and establishing a Council of Heads of Law Enforcement Agencies concerned with integrity and anti-corruption were also on the agenda.

On the sidelines of the conference, Sheikh Ghuson bin Hilal Al-Alawi, Chairman of SAI, met with heads of peer SAIs from Gulf Cooperation Council States and other friendly nations to discuss audit aspects, promoting integrity, combating corruption, and enhancing cooperation. The Arab Convention against Corruption, which Oman ratified in 2014, aims to prevent, combat, and detect corruption, as well as prosecute related crimes. The Convention also focuses on enhancing Arab cooperation, promoting transparency, accountability, and the rule of law, and encouraging individuals and civil society institutions to actively participate in preventing and combating corruption. Oman’s active involvement in conferences and initiatives like this highlights its dedication to fighting corruption and promoting integrity in the region.
