The Sultanate of Oman celebrates a glorious day on January 5th every year, as it marks the annual day of the Royal Oman Police (ROP). This day is dedicated to celebrating the achievements of the ROP and renewing its commitment to progress and development. The ROP has played a crucial role in dealing with security incidents throughout Oman, utilizing its commands, stations, and special tasks to support various formations. ROP Service Centres located in different wilayats of the Sultanate provide essential services such as traffic management, passport services, and civil services to both citizens and residents.
In November 2024, the ROP made significant advancements by opening a new ROP Station in Raysuit, along with a Coast Guard Station and a security center at Salalah Port. Additionally, the ROP introduced a number of electric cars to their security and traffic patrol fleet, demonstrating their commitment to sustainable development and the use of clean energy. The ROP also plays a key role in enhancing preparedness for potential risks arising from disasters, environmental incidents, and industrial accidents through the National Emergency Management Centre.
As a leading government institution supporting Oman’s digital society and e-government initiatives, the ROP provides over 650 electronic services to its users. By launching initiatives, training staff, and utilizing advanced technology, the ROP aims to align with Oman Vision 2040 and simplify procedures for citizens and residents. In 2024, the ROP introduced the digital identity service in their application, allowing for easy verification of individuals’ identities. Moreover, they implemented various services such as vehicle registration through car dealers, transfer of vehicle licenses, and payment of fines through digital platforms.
In recognition of their efforts to enhance user experience and develop digital services, the ROP received three local awards at the Comex Awards for Excellence in Technology 2024. These awards acknowledged the ROP’s best electronic services and smartphone application. The ROP Customs also played a crucial role in improving customs work through digitalization of procedures with the Bayan system, enabling customs clearance prior to the arrival of shipments. Additionally, the ROP launched a training program in 2024 for citizens involved in management and operations at the border posts, aiming to provide job opportunities for Omani youth and support national talents.
The Directorate General of Inquiries and Criminal Investigations within the ROP has continuously modernized its systems by acquiring new equipment, machines, and technical programs, while providing specialized training to its personnel. Efforts have been intensified in combating human trafficking and enhancing database systems. The ROP Coast Guard, responsible for safeguarding Oman’s territorial waters, conducting search and rescue operations, combating smuggling and illegal immigration, and ensuring security within ports and public establishments along the coast, plays a crucial role in maintaining national security. Through these efforts, the ROP continues to evolve and adapt to meet the growing demands of society and government initiatives, contributing to the progress and development of Oman.
