The Sultanate of Oman, represented by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry, and Investment Promotion (MoCIIP), will be celebrating World Metrology Day on May 20th, along with countries worldwide. This year’s theme is ‘Measuring Today for a Sustainable Tomorrow’, emphasizing the essential role of metrology in building a sustainable future. Imad bin Khamis Al Shukaili, the Director General of the Directorate General of Standards and Metrology at the MoCIIP, highlighted the significance of metrology in providing accurate data for understanding the environmental, economic, and social impacts of human activities.
Metrology plays a crucial role in enhancing the efficiency of natural resource utilization and reducing waste and losses in industrial processes. By applying precise measurement and monitoring techniques, areas for improvement can be identified, leading to minimized resource and energy consumption while decreasing waste production. Additionally, prioritizing metrology ensures the quality and safety of products and services by providing accurate measurements, reducing pollution, accidents, and improving public health and the environment.
Furthermore, metrology fosters innovation and development by promoting the creation of more sustainable and efficient products and services. By offering precise data and information, decisions and policies can be guided towards sustainability, aiding in understanding the environmental and economic impacts of human activities and developing strategies to mitigate them. The MoCIIP aims to enhance the infrastructure of metrology, verify the accuracy of new measurement technologies, and participate in international comparisons to ensure reliable and credible measurement results that meet international standards.
World Metrology Day is commemorated annually on May 20th, marking the signing of the Treaty of the Metre in 1875 to promote global cooperation in measurement. Oman joined the Meter Convention in 2013 and actively participates in the activities and events of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) established under this convention. The goal of the Meter Convention is to standardize measurement worldwide, a goal that remains relevant today in ensuring accurate and reliable measurements for a sustainable future.
