The Sultanate of Oman is celebrating a major achievement with the export of its first shipment of copper concentrates in 30 years. The shipment, consisting of 900 tonnes of high-quality copper concentrates, departed from the Al-Asail mine in Sohar, North Al Batinah Governorate, via Sohar Port. This milestone highlights Oman’s commitment to economic diversification and sustainable development, showcasing the nation’s ability to transform challenges into growth opportunities. Engineer Matar bin Salem Al-Badi, CEO of Oman Minerals Development Company, expressed excitement for the future of the mining sector in Oman, particularly with the upcoming commencement of operations at the Al-Bayda mine.
Al-Badi emphasized the historical significance of this event, noting the region’s long history of copper mining dating back 3,000 years. He highlighted the importance of technological advancements in exploration and extraction that have enabled the reopening of mines, contributing to the economic and social impact of the sector. The Al-Asail mine, located in concession area 11B in Sohar, is a vital part of Oman Mining Company’s operations, which is a subsidiary of Oman Minerals Development Company. The mine has an average annual production estimated at around 500,000 tonnes of copper ore, with operations at the Al-Bayda mine set to begin in the near future.
The redevelopment plan for both mines aims to target estimated reserves of approximately 2.78 million tonnes of copper ore, with the first phase expected to last four to five years. Ongoing exploration and drilling activities are underway to further expand these reserves, positioning Oman strategically in the global copper concentrate market. With global copper demand on the rise, Oman’s re-entry into the market is a strategic investment for the nation, especially considering the importance of copper in clean energy technologies, electric vehicles, and batteries. Oman Minerals Development Company’s ambitious expansion plans, including the Mazoon Copper Project, aim to solidify the nation’s position as a leader in the mining sector.
The export ceremony of the first shipment of copper concentrates was held under the patronage of His Excellency Mohammed bin Suleiman Al Kindi, Governor of North Al Batinah, with the presence of various dignitaries and representatives from government and private institutions. This event marks a significant moment in Oman’s mining history, showcasing the nation’s ability to leverage its natural resources for economic growth and sustainability. The successful export of copper concentrates signals a new era for Oman’s mining sector, with further developments and expansions on the horizon. The nation’s commitment to innovation, sustainability, and economic growth through the mining industry is evident in this milestone achievement.
