The Sultanate of Oman has recently launched the “National Programme for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Advanced Digital Technologies” in alignment with Oman Vision 2040. This initiative aims to make information and communications technologies a cornerstone in driving various sectors of the national economy. The programme, which covers the period from 2024 to 2026, includes multiple initiatives and projects to keep up with global advancements in the field of artificial intelligence.
One of the key components of the programme is the establishment of a national platform for open data to support entrepreneurs, investors, and decision-makers. Additionally, a national centre for research and development in artificial intelligence will be created to assist researchers and academics. A dedicated “studio” for artificial intelligence will serve as a meeting point for IT specialists, companies, and institutions seeking technical solutions. Moreover, an Omani language model will be developed, encompassing cultural, historical, artistic, and scientific content using generative AI. Lastly, a centre for the Fourth Industrial Revolution (4IR) will be established in cooperation with the Ministry of Economy and in partnership with the World Economic Forum.
According to Eng. Said Hamoud Al Ma’awali, Minister of Transport, Communications, and Information Technology, the new programme represents an evolution of the Executive Programme for Artificial Intelligence and Advanced Technologies launched in 2022. The Ministry is dedicated to laying a solid foundation for the implementation of AI applications and advanced digital technologies in Oman, with the ultimate goal of building a digital economy that supports sustainable development. The programme specifically emphasizes integrating AI applications into economic and development sectors to localize advanced digital technologies, enhance governance, and elevate Oman’s global rankings.
By focusing on advancing AI technology companies and encouraging investments, the National AI Programme seeks to establish new AI data centers and increase the digital economy’s contribution to Oman’s GDP to 10 percent by 2040, up from 2 percent in 2021. These efforts align with Oman Vision 2040’s vision of leveraging digital technologies to drive economic growth and enhance the country’s standing on the global stage. The National AI Programme signifies Oman’s dedication to leveraging the latest digital technologies for economic prosperity and securing a place among the leading countries worldwide.
