Oman is being praised for its efficient traffic flow in a recent survey conducted by Numbeo. The Mid-Year 2024 Traffic Index ranks Oman as the least congested Arab city, with commuters spending an average of just 19.9 minutes in traffic each day. This is in stark contrast to cities like Lagos, Nigeria, where drivers endure an average of 68.8 minutes in traffic daily. Oman’s ranking of 161st globally in terms of traffic congestion makes it the least crowded city traffic-wise in the Arab world.

Brig-Eng. Ali Sulayem Al Falahi, Director General of Traffic at Royal Oman Police, attributes Oman’s success in maintaining manageable traffic conditions to the efforts made by the General Directorate of Traffic in coordination with other authorities. He highlighted the importance of designing and implementing roads, monitoring road users, imposing traffic control, and educating the public on traffic rules. These efforts have not only improved traffic flow but also enhanced road safety for residents and tourists alike.

The Numbeo’s Mid-Year 2024 Traffic Index report also sheds light on global cities struggling with extreme congestion such as Los Angeles, Colombo, Delhi, and Dhaka. Oman’s relatively smooth traffic flow can be attributed to its well-maintained infrastructure, low population density, and strategic urban planning. The country has invested significantly in recent years in infrastructure projects aimed at improving connectivity and reducing travel times between key areas.

Despite Oman’s success in maintaining manageable traffic conditions, congestion remains a global challenge, especially in rapidly growing urban areas. Factors such as rapid urbanization, inadequate public transportation options, and high vehicle ownership contribute to congestion issues in cities like Los Angeles, Colombo, and Dhaka. The Traffic Index serves as a valuable tool for city planners and governments worldwide to identify severe congestion challenges and potential solutions.

Oman’s performance in the Numbeo Traffic Index suggests that its current strategies are effective and could serve as a model for other cities with high levels of congestion. By focusing on sustainable and low-emission transportation initiatives, Oman aligns with its Vision 2040 strategy to improve quality of life across various sectors, including transportation. With continued efforts from various parties, Oman aims to make its roads safer and set an example for other countries in managing traffic flow efficiently.
