The Civil Aviation Authority in Oman has introduced a new Passenger Rights Protection Regulation aimed at ensuring a seamless travel experience for flyers. The regulations require airlines to be transparent in their advertising of ticket fares, flights, and services, and prohibit the addition of undisclosed fees. Additionally, airlines are now obligated to limit overbooking and may prevent passengers from traveling if a flight is overbooked. In the event of flight cancellations or delays, airlines are required to provide care and support to affected passengers.
According to the new regulations, if a flight is delayed, airlines must provide refreshments and beverages after the second hour, and an appropriate meal if the delay exceeds three hours. If the delay exceeds six hours, airlines must also offer hotel accommodation and transportation to and from the airport. When a domestic flight is cancelled while the passenger is at the airport, the airline is responsible for dealing with the passenger and providing alternative arrangements. If the alternative flight is in a higher class, the airline must cover the fare difference, and if it is in a lower cabin, the airline must reimburse the passenger for the ticket price difference.
In the case of international flight cancellations, airlines must notify passengers within 14 days of the scheduled departure time and explain their rights to care and support. The airline must also offer alternative flights and compensate the passenger accordingly based on the distance of the flight. The compensation amounts range from OMR108 for flights under 1,500 kilometers to OMR260 for flights over 3,500 kilometers. The calculation of compensation takes into account the distance between the departure airport and the final destination.
Overall, the Passenger Rights Protection Regulation in Oman aims to protect the rights of air travelers and ensure that airlines are held accountable for providing quality service. By implementing these regulations, the Civil Aviation Authority hopes to establish a fair and transparent process for handling flight cancellations, delays, and overbooking situations. This initiative is a positive step towards enhancing the travel experience for passengers and promoting confidence in the aviation industry in Oman.
