The Ministry of Health in Muscat, in collaboration with UNICEF Oman, is launching a “Training of Trainers” (ToT) program focused on Social and Behavior Change, Positive Parenting, and Early Childhood Development. This program aims to equip educators and healthcare professionals in primary healthcare centers across Oman with the skills needed to become professional trainers in early childhood development. Participants will learn about fostering early learning, responsive feeding, positive discipline, and promoting the inclusion of children with disabilities. The program will also provide hands-on experience and guidance on training methodologies, presentation skills, leadership qualities, and facilitating discussions.
Dr. Badria bint Mohsen Al-Rashdiya, Director General of Primary Healthcare, highlighted the importance of the ToT program in early childhood development and positive parenting. These trained professionals will be the first line of guidance for parents, offering advice on this crucial aspect of child-rearing. Dr. Bilal Kiswani, Programme Manager at UNICEF Oman, emphasized the significance of the early stages of a child’s life, known as the ‘first 1,000 days,’ in shaping their future well-being. Regular education for parents on handling their children’s physical and mental health needs is essential for their overall development and success in various aspects of life.
The ToT program also supports the achievement of Sustainable Development Goals related to integrated early childhood development and strengthening the capacity of parents and caregivers in areas such as education and health. UNICEF Oman, in partnership with government entities, is working to develop national strategies grounded in social and economic indicators. This involves promoting community engagement and utilizing modern and traditional media channels to reach parents and children effectively. Collaboration with national counterparts directly engaged with parents and children is a key aspect of this strategic program for social and behavioral change.
By focusing on social and behavior change, positive parenting, and early childhood development, the Ministry of Health and UNICEF Oman are taking proactive steps to empower families in raising children and promoting their holistic well-being. The ToT program equips healthcare professionals and educators with the necessary skills to guide parents on positive parenting techniques and early childhood development. Providing training on fostering early learning, positive discipline, and inclusive childcare, the program aims to create a supportive environment for children’s growth and development.
The program also addresses common challenges that trainers may encounter during sessions and equips them with strategies for handling them professionally. Participants gain essential knowledge and practical tools for becoming effective trainers in early childhood development and positive parenting. By enhancing the skills of these professionals, the ToT program aims to contribute to the long-term health, happiness, and learning ability of children in Oman, ultimately advancing the overall well-being of families and communities across the Sultanate.
