Indian Embassy in Oman celebrates 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and International Day of Non-Violence

The Embassy of India in Muscat recently celebrated the 155th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi and the International Day of Non-Violence in collaboration with the Raja Yoga Center for Self Development. The event was attended by approximately 200 individuals from various backgrounds, including Omani dignitaries, friends of India, students from both nations, resident Ambassadors, members of the diplomatic corps, and the Indian diaspora. Notably, 20 students from Sultan Qaboos University were present, demonstrating the younger generation’s interest in embracing Gandhian principles of peace and tolerance.

The ceremony kicked off with a floral tribute at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi, which was adorned with a new canopy sponsored by Pravasi Bharatiya Samman Awardee and long-time Oman resident, Mr. Kiran Asher. The event was graced by H.H. Sayyida Hujaija Al Said as the Chief Guest, with H.E. Sheikh Humaid Almaani and Sister B.K. Asha from the Raja Yoga Centre in attendance as Guests of Honor. In his opening speech, H.E Amit Narang, the Indian Ambassador to Oman, highlighted the significance of non-violence in Indian culture and praised Mahatma Gandhi for harnessing this value to combat oppression and injustice worldwide.

H.H. Sayyida Hujaija Al Said commended Mahatma Gandhi’s enduring legacy in promoting peace and non-violence on a global scale, emphasizing that his values continue to provide guidance for conflict resolution through dialogue and diplomacy. She also referenced the Gandhi Peace Prize, which was posthumously awarded to the late Sultan Qaboos in recognition of his contributions to peace and non-violence. Sister B.K. Asha further expounded on Gandhian principles, focusing on inner peace and universal brotherhood as essential elements in today’s world.

Students from various Indian schools in Oman delivered a heartfelt performance of the renowned Gandhian hymn “Vaishnav Jan To,” capturing the essence of Gandhi’s principles of humility, empathy, and compassion. Additionally, a captivating dance-drama depicting key events from Mahatma Gandhi’s life was presented by students, further highlighting his impactful journey. The event concluded with a reaffirmation of the commitment to upholding non-violence, peace, and truth, which serve as the foundation of the enduring friendship between India and Oman.

The celebration of Mahatma Gandhi’s birth anniversary and the International Day of Non-Violence in Muscat symbolized the shared values of peace, tolerance, and friendship between India and Oman. The event brought together individuals from diverse backgrounds, including Omani dignitaries, students, diplomats, and members of the Indian community, to commemorate the life and teachings of the revered leader. The participation of young scholars from Sultan Qaboos University underscored the importance of instilling Gandhian values in future generations and fostering a culture of non-violence and understanding.
