Khasab in the Musandam Governorate celebrated the laying of the foundation stone of a project to develop the historical Telegraph Island. The project, an environmental tourism facility, is being set up by Musandam Governor’s Office in collaboration with Musandam Municipality, OQ Company, and the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism. The ceremony was held under the patronage of Sayyid Ibrahim Said Al Busaidi, Governor of Musandam.
The project will include the construction of a multipurpose hall, a public service building, a sea landing platform, and a mountain walkway leading to all parts of the island. Additionally, two photography piers, a shaded area, a guard room, and a building for electricity generators and fuel tanks will be established. The historical significance of the island lies in its role as the first modern telecommunication line in the Middle East, with a cable connecting Mumbai in India to Basra in Iraq, making it a transmission station in 1864.
The island’s unique historical fame, as well as its demographics, natural components, and outstanding location among the maritime creeks, make Telegraph Island a popular destination for tourists and adventure enthusiasts. The project aims to preserve and enhance the island’s historical significance while providing a sustainable and environmentally friendly tourism experience. The development of the island will not only attract more visitors but also create opportunities for economic growth and job creation in the region.
The establishment of infrastructure such as a multipurpose hall, public service building, sea landing platform, and mountain walkway will enhance the visitor experience and offer a safe and comfortable environment for tourists. The photography piers overlooking the island’s landmarks will provide stunning views for visitors to capture and preserve memories of their time on Telegraph Island. Additionally, the shaded area, guard room, and building for electricity generators and fuel tanks will ensure that the island is well-maintained and equipped for sustainable tourism.
The historical significance of Telegraph Island as a hub for modern communications in the region adds to its appeal as a tourist destination. The island’s connection to the British government and Sultan Thuwaini bin Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi further enhances its cultural and historical value. By preserving and developing the island’s infrastructure and facilities, the project will not only attract more tourists but also educate visitors about the island’s importance in the history of telecommunications.
Overall, the development of Telegraph Island as an environmental tourism facility is a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism in the Musandam Governorate. The project will not only attract more visitors to the region but also create economic opportunities for the local community. By preserving the island’s historical significance and enhancing its infrastructure, the project will contribute to the conservation of cultural heritage and promote responsible tourism practices in the region.
