Sur, the Arab Tourism Capital for 2024, has been honored with an exhibition at the National Museum titled “Sur in the Memory of Postage Stamps”. The exhibition offers visitors a historical visual journey through stamps that tell the story of Sur’s rich history and culture. Inaugurated under the patronage of Dr. Yahya Badr Al Ma’awali, Governor of South A’Sharqiyah, the event will run until 14 November 2024. The exhibition showcases around 16 themes of postage stamps that document achievements and historical events in Sur, providing insights into Oman’s rich heritage.

One of the standout stamps featured in the exhibition is the 1996 regular issue depicting traditional Omani ships, including the famous “ghanjah” built in Sur. This stamp symbolizes the craftsmanship of the residents of Sur in shipbuilding and their significant role in trade and navigation across the Indian Ocean. Another noteworthy stamp on display is the “Suri Dagger” stamp issued in 2001, reflecting the traditional craftsmanship and serving as a symbol of Sur culture. The exhibition also includes the “Omani Aflaj” stamp, emphasizing sustainable water management, with a focus on “Falaj al-Jeela”, a UNESCO World Heritage site.

Additionally, the exhibition features the 2023 “Alphabet of Omani Scripting” stamp, showcasing Oman’s history of writing and documentation, as well as Sur’s importance as a symbol of maritime civilizations and cultural heritage. Another highlight is the “Omani Manuscripts” issue stamp, displaying the manuscript Madin al-Asrar fi Uloom al-Bihar by the Suri navigator Nasser Ali Al Khudouri, illustrating the deep maritime knowledge and traditions of the people of Sur. The collection of stamps offers a unique perspective on the history and culture of Sur, providing a glimpse into the rich heritage of the region.

The National Museum’s “Friends of Oman Museums” membership card offers exclusive benefits to its holders at contributing institutions, aiming to enhance the cultural role of museums and provide a rich and unique experience for cardholders. This initiative seeks to promote cultural awareness and appreciation among visitors and locals alike, highlighting the importance of preserving and celebrating the heritage and traditions of Sur. The exhibition serves as a tribute to the cultural significance of Sur and its contributions to Oman’s history and identity, showcasing the region’s unique heritage through the lens of postage stamps.

Overall, the exhibition “Sur in the Memory of Postage Stamps” at the National Museum offers a captivating and informative experience for visitors, presenting a visual narrative of Sur’s rich history and cultural heritage. Through a collection of stamps documenting significant events and achievements in Sur, the exhibition sheds light on the region’s maritime traditions, craftsmanship, and cultural identity.
