Sur, the Arab Tourism Capital for 2024, has been honored with an exhibition at the National Museum titled “Sur in the Memory of Postage Stamps”. The exhibition offers visitors a historical visual journey through stamps that tell the story of Sur’s rich history and culture. Inaugurated under the patronage of Dr. Yahya Badr Al Ma’awali, Governor of South A’Sharqiyah, the event will run until 14 November 2024. The exhibition showcases around 16 themes of postage stamps that document achievements and historical events in Sur, providing insights into Oman’s rich heritage.
One of the standout stamps featured in the exhibition is the 1996 regular issue depicting traditional Omani ships, including the famous “ghanjah” built in Sur. Additionally, the exhibition features the 2023 “Alphabet of Omani Scripting” stamp, showcasing Oman’s history of writing and documentation, as well as Sur’s importance as a symbol of maritime civilizations and cultural heritage. Another highlight is the “Omani Manuscripts” issue stamp, displaying the manuscript Madin al-Asrar fi Uloom al-Bihar by the Suri navigator Nasser Ali Al Khudouri, illustrating the deep maritime knowledge and traditions of the people of Sur.
