The Dhofar Governorate in Muscat is home to many beautiful beaches that are perfect for visitors and beachgoers looking to enjoy the Khareef season. One of the most stunning beaches in the city of Salalah is Al Dahariz Beach, which boasts soft white sand and tall hookah trees. Families often visit this beach to relax and engage in various water activities. With an area of over 3,500 square metres, Al Dahariz Beach offers amenities such as restaurants, cafes, designated barbecue areas, and public facilities. Situated near the Khor Al-Dharez Reserve, the beach provides opportunities to observe wildlife, including different plant species, fish, and migratory birds like flamingos. The beach is also equipped with touristic lighting to cater to families’ nighttime enjoyment.
A 40-kilometre drive from Salalah city centre toward the west will bring visitors to Al Mughsayl Beach, one of Dhofar Governorate’s most popular tourist attractions. Surrounded by blue sea water and white sand, the beach features unique natural landscapes and fountains nestled between mountain ranges, giving it a picturesque backdrop. During the Khareef days, Al Mughsayl Beach sees a steady stream of visitors eager to witness the powerful waves of the Arabian Sea, particularly during the autumn season when the waves are at their most impressive. However, swimming is prohibited from June 21 to September 21 each year due to the high sea wave levels. The area has recently undergone upgrades to its tourism infrastructure, including the development of the Mughsayl waterfront to enhance the visitor experience with various amenities.
The Wilayat of Taqah is renowned for being a prime fishing area in Dhofar Governorate, known for its sardine fishing. Many of the state’s inhabitants engage in fishing and livestock rearing as their primary livelihood. The Taqah Beach, stretching 5 kilometres, offers soft silver sand and coconut trees lining the shore. Adjacent to the beach is Khor Ruri Beach, strategically located near the ancient city of Samharam, which was once a major trading hub for Omani frankincense. Taqah boasts diverse natural features, including beaches, plains, mountains, caves, and natural water springs, making it an ideal spot for nature lovers. Additionally, Taqah Creek and Ruri Creek, along with numerous caves, add to the area’s appeal for visitors.
Located on the eastern side of the Dhofar Governorate, the Wilayat of Mirbat offers a coastal experience overlooking the Arabian Sea. This historical and tourist city boasts diverse beaches, coral reefs, and scenic bays, just 76 kilometres from Salalah. Mirbat Beach stands out for its natural beauty, silver sands, coral rocks, and small bays rich in fish and coral reefs, making it a popular diving destination in Oman. Many residents derive their livelihoods from fishing, allowing visitors to witness local customs and traditions. The historic Mirbat Fort overlooks the old port, while the old state market serves as a historic marketplace for goods imported from various regions. The wilayat sees a significant influx of tourists year-round, drawn by activities such as fishing, exploring historical sites, and marveling at rare marine resources.
Mirbat is home to rare marine fisheries like Al-Safilah (abalone) and Sharkha, with Al-Safilah found in beaches spanning from Mirbat to the Niyabat of Sharbat in the Wilayat of Shalim and the Al-Halaniyat Islands. Notably, the Omani Abalone Farming Project was inaugurated in Mirbat in August 2022, part of the Ministry of Agricultural Wealth, Fisheries, and Water Resources’ efforts to encourage private sector investment in food security and fisheries. The wilayat’s diverse marine resources and attractions, such as coral reefs, sea waves, and ancient sites, make it a sought-after destination for tourists seeking natural beauty and cultural experiences. Whether visitors are interested in historical exploration, diving adventures, or simply soaking in the stunning coastal scenery, Mirbat offers something for everyone.
