The “Bisya and Salut Archaeological Visitor Centre” in the Wilayat of Bahla in the Governorate of Al Dakhiliyah has been a popular destination for both local and global tourists since its opening in February 2023. According to statistics from the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the center welcomed approximately 7,546 visitors from its opening until the end of May 2024. The center was established to prepare archaeological sites for tourism and help visitors understand the historical significance of the Bisya and Salut archaeological area. Ahmed bin Mohammed Al Tamimi, Director of the Bisiya and Salut Archaeological Site Department, highlighted the importance of the center in showcasing the history of human settlement in the region and the cultural connections between Oman and ancient civilizations.

The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism has been actively involved in rehabilitating archaeological sites in the Bisya and Salut region, including the maintenance of pathways to these sites. The “Bisya and Salut Archaeological Visitor Centre” features informative display panels that summarize the history of archaeological research in the region, human settlement patterns, cemetery structures, and trade relationships between neighboring civilizations. The center is equipped with modern technologies such as interactive screens to enhance visitors’ understanding of the exhibits. The director of the center emphasized the importance of scientific research, with various departments working to support the ministry’s efforts in surveying, scientific documentation, and monitoring of archaeological sites. Additionally, the center provides support to researchers and individuals interested in history and archaeology.

The archaeological collections on display at the “Bisya and Salut Archaeological Visitor Centre” are organized into three main sections: the Bronze Age Hall, the Iron Age Hall, and the World Heritage Sites Section. These sections showcase 344 artifacts that represent different time periods of human settlement in the region. The exhibits highlight economic activities such as agriculture, trade, and mining, with items ranging from tools and pottery utensils to seals and bronze artifacts. The center aims to provide visitors with a comprehensive understanding of the region’s history and cultural heritage.

In addition to displaying archaeological artifacts, the “Bisya and Salut Archaeological Visitor Centre” offers educational programs and workshops for visitors. A field classroom has been set up to host workshops, camps, and events that combine seasonal and practical applications. In 2023, the center hosted 13 events, and a diverse program package has been prepared for the following year. These programs aim to engage visitors of all ages in learning about the archaeological significance of the Bisya and Salut region. The center serves as a hub for promoting cultural awareness and appreciation for Oman’s rich history.

Overall, the “Bisya and Salut Archaeological Visitor Centre” has played a significant role in preserving and promoting the historical and cultural heritage of the Bisya and Salut region. By welcoming thousands of visitors and providing educational resources, the center has helped raise awareness about the importance of protecting archaeological sites and understanding the region’s history. The Ministry of Heritage and Tourism’s efforts to rehabilitate and maintain archaeological sites in the region have been instrumental in enhancing the visitor experience and supporting ongoing scientific research. The center continues to be a valuable resource for researchers, historians, and tourists interested in exploring Oman’s rich archaeological past.
