The fourth edition of the Oman Geological Heritage Exhibition, themed “Sustainability and Job Opportunities,” has been launched at Al Hazm Fort in the Wilayat of A’Rustaq in the South Al Batinah Governorate. This event, which runs until the end of June 2025, is a joint effort by the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism, the Office of the Governor of South Al Batinah, Petroleum Development Oman, and the Geological Society of Oman. The main goal of this exhibition is to enhance the tourism experience by showcasing the geological heritage of Oman and creating job opportunities in the geotourism sector.

The opening ceremony of the exhibition was held under the patronage of Eng. Masoud Said Al Hashimi, Governor of South Al Batinah. It signifies the dedication of the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism to emphasize the importance of geological heritage in Oman and to ensure its preservation and sustainability. The event features six corners that focus on the geological history of Oman, the diverse geology of the country, the formation of its land, the significance of preserving geological heritage, and the potential job opportunities in geotourism. Through this exhibition, visitors can gain insights into the unique geological formations and fossils found in Oman.

One of the highlights of the exhibition is a fossil that dates back approximately 800 million years, showcasing the rich geological history of the Sultanate of Oman. Additionally, attendees can view three-dimensional scientific models of extinct creatures such as the primitive elephant and dinosaur, whose fossilized remains were discovered in different regions of Oman. These unique exhibits offer a glimpse into the ancient past of the country and highlight the importance of preserving geological heritage for future generations.

By promoting geotourism and showcasing the geological wonders of Oman, the exhibition aims to attract more tourists and create job opportunities in this sector. Geotourism involves exploring geological features, landscapes, and ecosystems, providing visitors with a deeper understanding of the earth’s history and natural resources. Through initiatives like this exhibition, the Ministry of Heritage and Tourism hopes to diversify the museum system in Oman and boost tourism in various governorates by highlighting the geological heritage of the country.

The collaboration between government entities, private organizations, and academic institutions in organizing the Oman Geological Heritage Exhibition demonstrates a unified effort to promote sustainable tourism and raise awareness about the geological riches of the Sultanate. By engaging visitors through interactive displays, educational materials, and hands-on experiences, the exhibition serves as a platform for learning and appreciation of Oman’s geological heritage. It also sheds light on the potential economic benefits and job opportunities that can arise from geotourism initiatives.

In conclusion, the Oman Geological Heritage Exhibition in A’Rustaq represents a significant step towards promoting sustainable tourism, preserving geological heritage, and creating job opportunities in the geotourism sector. By showcasing the unique geological formations, fossils, and scientific models of extinct creatures found in Oman, the exhibition offers valuable insights into the country’s rich geological history. Through collaboration and cooperation among various stakeholders, this event aims to enhance the tourism experience and attract more visitors to explore the geological wonders of the Sultanate.
