The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) recently hosted a signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between US-based satellite launch company ABL Space Systems and Etlaq spaceport. The signing took place in Muscat and was attended by CAA President Naif Al-Abri and Ana Escrogima, the United States Ambassador to Oman. The MoU aims to explore launching ABL’s RS1 launch vehicle from the Etlaq Spaceport, which is expected to become operational in 2027. The spaceport, located at 18-degree latitude, will provide wide orbital access from sun synchronous to low inclination orbits and will position Oman as a regional and global leader in the space industry.
The initial focus of the project will be on evaluating local logistics and site construction, as well as developing regulatory and export control frameworks with both the US and Oman governments. The Etlaq Spaceport is strategically located near a commercial airport and a deepwater port in Duqm, providing critical logistical capabilities to support satellite missions.
