The Sultanate of Oman will host the 15th edition of the Arab Theatre Festival from 9 to 15 January 2025. The festival, organized in cooperation with the Arab Theatre Institute and Oman Theatre Society, will feature 15 theatrical performances from Oman and abroad. These performances will be staged in three different theatres: Al Bustan Palace, Oman Convention and Exhibition Centre (Al Irfan), and the College of Banking Studies. The festival aims to bring together Arab artists, theatre specialists, writers, and directors to explore ways of enhancing the role of theatre in supporting culture and innovation in the Arab world.
Sayyid Said bin Sultan Al Busaidi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Youth for Culture, and Chairman of the Main Committee of the 15th Arab Theatre Festival, highlighted the participation of more than 500 Arab artists in staging the 15 theatrical performances and accompanying activities. These activities include an exhibition of Omani handicrafts, an art exhibition, 30 press conferences, and a scholarly workshop focusing on various aspects of theatre, artificial intelligence, and innovation. Additionally, there will be 33 book signing sessions featuring publications on Omani, GCC, and Arab theatre arts, including the launch of 9 new books on Omani theatre.
A key highlight of the festival will be the Arab Theatre Day message presented by Palestinian artist Fat’hi Abdul-Rahman on 10 January. The festival aims to reflect Arab shared values and promote cultural communication, exchange experiences, establish partnerships, and enhance integration with global institutions. The main 15 theatrical performances will be presented by 13 Arab countries competing for the “Award for the Best Arab Theatrical Performance”, sponsored by Sheikh Dr. Sultan Mohammad Al Qasimi. The festival seeks to promote Arab culture, particularly Arab theatre, and contribute to the objectives of the Arab Strategy for Theatre Development by fostering innovation, showcasing Arab theatrical products, and enhancing research and writings accessible to all segments of society.
Overall, the 15th Arab Theatre Festival in Oman is set to be a vibrant platform for showcasing the creativity and talent of Arab artists, while also fostering cultural exchange, innovation, and collaboration. With a diverse array of performances, workshops, exhibitions, and discussions, the festival promises to be a celebration of Arab theatre and a testament to the region’s rich cultural heritage.
