The Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries have expressed their support and interest in the ongoing efforts of the Sri Lankan government towards achieving reconciliation and accountability for human rights violations, as well as addressing the severe economic crisis facing the country. The statement was delivered by the Permanent Representative of Qatar to the UN Office in Geneva, Dr. Hind bint Abdulrahman Al Muftah, on behalf of the GCC countries during the 57th session of the Human Rights Council.

The GCC countries commended Sri Lanka for its positive and constructive interaction with international human rights mechanisms, as well as its commitment to fulfilling its international obligations. Specifically, they highlighted the establishment of the Joint Ministerial Permanent Committee on Human Rights, which is responsible for implementing recommendations from international mechanisms. Additionally, they acknowledged efforts to provide social support to poor families and enhance food security in the country.

In urging the Sri Lankan government to continue legislative reforms, the GCC emphasized the importance of dialogue in achieving national reconciliation and stability, as well as promoting human rights. They also called for support through technical cooperation, capacity building, and constructive dialogue to enhance the chances of reconciliation and economic prosperity in Sri Lanka.

Overall, the GCC countries reaffirmed their commitment to following the progress and efforts of the Sri Lankan government in addressing human rights issues and economic challenges. By supporting legislative reforms and promoting dialogue and cooperation, they aim to help Sri Lanka achieve reconciliation and economic prosperity for its citizens.
