The University of Technology Bahrain (UTB) recently hosted this year’s IEEE Day, aiming to bring together future innovators, professionals, and thought leaders in engineering and technology. Organized by student volunteers from UTB’s College of Engineering in collaboration with IEEE Bahrain student branches, the event aimed to promote innovation, collaboration, and engineering excellence. The event featured a robotics challenge, keynote speeches from experts, and a project presentation competition, with attendees from various universities in Bahrain and industry VIPs.

The robotics challenge showcased the creativity and technical skills of aspiring engineers, with Dr. Haitham Alqahtani, UTB’s Vice President for Academic Affairs, emphasizing the importance of IEEE Day in celebrating engineers’ contributions globally. He also highlighted the upcoming International Conference on Emerging Technologies and Applied Sciences (ICETAS) in collaboration with UTB, scheduled for November 2024. The event aimed to inspire and engage students in the field of engineering and technology.

Keynote speakers, including Dr. Adel Abdulla and Engr. Kai-Uwe Ernst Miethig, shared valuable insights on the future of engineering and technology. Dr. Abdulla discussed IEEE’s long-standing legacy of advancing engineering excellence, while Engr. Miethig encouraged members to take advantage of IEEE’s training, internships, scholarships, and entrepreneurial support. UTB was recognized for having the highest number of IEEE members among Bahrain’s universities, positioning itself as a leader in engineering education.

The engineering project presentation competition was the highlight of the day, where students from various universities presented innovative solutions to engineering problems. These presentations facilitated collaboration, idea exchange, and broadening of perspectives among attendees. The event concluded with an awards ceremony, recognizing the top performers in both the project presentation and robotics challenge. Bahrain Polytechnic and UTB secured first and second place, respectively, in the project presentation, while UTB and the American University of Bahrain claimed first and second place in the robotics challenge.

Through events like IEEE Day, UTB reaffirms its commitment to nurturing the engineers of the future through its industry-responsive engineering programs like Mechatronics, Informatics, and Environmental Engineering. The university continues to establish itself as a leading institution in innovation and engineering education in Bahrain. The collaboration between students, industry experts, and professionals at IEEE Day underscores the importance of networking, knowledge sharing, and fostering a culture of excellence in the field of engineering and technology.
