Rainwater drainage and recycling have been a topic of discussion in Bahrain, with the Ministry considering different ways to benefit from or recycle the excavated rainwater. Eng. Khalaf mentioned that stormwater is usually discharged into the sea, but they have attempted to inject it into underground water. However, strict rules need to be followed, and further discussions are ongoing due to environmental concerns. The Ministry has taken measures to reduce the negative effects by providing tanks for excavating excessive water, upgrading vacuum tankers, and installing pumps in vital areas.
One of the major challenges faced by the Ministry during the rainy season is the uncivil behavior of some individuals who tamper with sewage manholes, allowing rainwater to mix with the sewerage network. This disrupts and damages the networks, resulting in sewerage backing up into homes. The Ministry has been raising awareness about the dangers of such actions and fulfilling requests to install rainwater roof coatings to prevent leakages in homes, especially for low and medium-income citizens.
Efforts to reduce traffic congestions on Bahrain’s roads are being made by the Ministry through the development of strategic roads and other projects funded by the state budget or the GCC Marshall Plan. These projects aim to alleviate traffic congestion and have received positive feedback from motorists. The much-anticipated fourth bridge connecting Manama and Muharraq is part of the Muharraq Ring Road project with a budget of USD250 million. Tenders for the project are currently being evaluated with a plan for completion by 2020.
