With summer temperatures on the rise, the risk of car fires also increases significantly. This is a concern whether the car is in motion or parked, as there are several factors that can contribute to a potential fire. Automotive safety experts point out that flammable items such as perfume bottles or lighters can be a hazard, as well as the misuse of air conditioning units. To avoid these dangers, it is essential to take specific precautions to ensure the safety of yourself and your vehicle.

One important tip recommended by experts is to crack open the car windows slightly when parking in the sun for an extended period. This allows for air circulation and can help prevent the interior of the car from overheating. It is also crucial to remove any flammable items from the vehicle, such as lighters or aerosol cans. Additionally, experts advise keeping a fire extinguisher in the car at all times for added safety in case of an emergency.

Another key precaution to take is to disconnect chargers, wires, and any other electrical connections after turning off the car. This step can prevent potential electrical hazards from occurring. Regular maintenance of the car’s cooling system and brake pads is also vital. It is essential to check coolant levels regularly and to be cautious when opening the radiator cap while the engine is hot. Experts also caution against adding cold water to a hot radiator without the engine running, as this can lead to damage to the cylinder head.

To avoid tyre blowouts, experts recommend regularly checking tyre pressure and adjusting it according to the weather conditions. It is also advisable to avoid filling the fuel tank to the brim and to fill up in the evening when temperatures are cooler. Inspecting the fuel tank, pipes, hoses, and fuel regulator for leaks is also crucial. In addition, it is important to check fuel hoses for cracks and ensure all connections are secure to prevent any potential accidents.

When it comes to engine maintenance, experts warn against using fuel to clean engine parts and starting the engine before it is completely dry. Any welding work on the fuel system should only be done with appropriate precautions in place. Proper connections in the car’s electrical system are also emphasized by experts. It is essential to use the correct electrical wires and ensure they are covered to prevent any friction with the car body. Battery terminals should also be kept isolated from the car’s metal parts to prevent any electrical issues.

Lastly, experts recommend refraining from smoking in the car to reduce the risk of cigarette embers falling and igniting flammable materials. By following these safety tips and taking necessary precautions, drivers can help reduce the risk of car fires during the hot summer months. Staying vigilant and proactive in maintaining your vehicle can go a long way in ensuring both your safety and the safety of others on the road.
