Prominent parliamentarian Ahmed Qarata has expressed his optimism regarding the swift disbursement of compensation for businesses impacted by the Old Manama Souq fire. Amid critical meetings on the horizon, Qarata criticized the lack of action and half-hearted efforts in addressing the plight of store owners in the old Souq, despite allocated budgets and proposals. He emphasized the need for tangible outcomes and revitalization efforts, promising prompt compensation for the 75 gutted stores.

The aftermath of the June fire, which claimed three lives and left several shops completely destroyed, was described as resembling “a graveyard” by a market regulator. Qarata urged a focus on post-fire recovery and concrete outcomes for the Bab Al Bahrain market. He highlighted the significance of directives from His Royal Highness the Crown Prince and Prime Minister, calling for a comprehensive redevelopment plan to preserve the market’s cultural and historical essence while addressing critical infrastructure needs.

Riyadh Al Mahrous, Chairman of the Manama Souq Development Committee, advocates for the establishment of an independent management body with a dedicated budget funded through revenue generated from market services. Al Mahrous emphasizes the importance of sustainable development and preservation, addressing issues such as electricity overload, disorganized shops, and illegal workshops. Preserving Bab Al Bahrain’s authentic Bahraini identity is paramount to Al Mahrous, who stresses the long-awaited development and the need for a sustainable management framework.

Al Mahrous suggests empowering an independent management body to oversee market administration and manage a financial fund sourced from revenue generated by existing market facilities. He urges the Capital Governorate to spearhead market development efforts and expresses concern over entities benefiting from market revenues without contributing to its upkeep. The focus on sustainable development, infrastructure improvements, and preserving the market’s historical significance are crucial aspects that Al Mahrous believes will drive progress and ensure the Bab Al Bahrain market’s long-term success.

Overall, the efforts of parliamentarian Ahmed Qarata, along with the advocacy of Riyadh Al Mahrous for an independent management body and sustainable development initiatives, signal a positive step towards revitalizing the Old Manama Souq and preserving its cultural heritage. With a focus on concrete outcomes, prompt compensation for affected businesses, and a comprehensive redevelopment plan, there is optimism for the market’s future under the guidance of dedicated individuals working towards its revitalization and long-term success.
