The Minister of Education in Bahrain, Dr. Mohammed bin Mubarak Juma, has announced plans to introduce an English curriculum within scientific and mathematical subjects in a phased manner. This decision is based on the recognition of the vital role English proficiency plays in acquiring knowledge, particularly in the technological field. MP Mariam Al-Saegh has advocated for the incorporation of English into the public school curriculum, along with improved pedagogy and instructor development. The Minister affirmed that the ministry is committed to achieving linguistic excellence through dedicated programs aimed at enhancing English language skills.

The Ministry of Education in Bahrain is focusing on providing daily sessions to enhance the English language skills of students, as well as preparatory courses for standardized tests such as the TOEFL and IELTS. The goal is not only to teach English but to empower students with the language’s capabilities. Despite the emphasis on English proficiency, the Ministry is also mindful of the importance of the Arabic language, which is deeply rooted in Bahrain’s cultural heritage. Research in applied linguistics has highlighted the significance of the native language, especially during the early years of education.

In Bahrain, there is a growing emphasis on the importance of English proficiency in academic and professional settings. By introducing an English curriculum within scientific and mathematical subjects, the Ministry of Education is aiming to equip students with the necessary language skills to succeed in a globalized world. The planned initiatives reflect a commitment to linguistic excellence and the recognition of English as a key tool for knowledge acquisition in the technological sphere. Additionally, the Ministry’s focus on preserving the sanctity of the Arabic language underscores the value of linguistic diversity in education.
