Medical errors have become a cause for concern in Bahrain’s healthcare system, costing public hospitals and primary care centers 100,000 dinars. The National Health Regulatory Authority (NHRA) revealed this information in response to a parliamentary inquiry by MP Mahmood Fardan. Despite this financial setback, the NHRA reassured the public that Bahrain’s healthcare system operates under a framework that prioritizes safety and reliability. It also highlighted the procedures in place to address claims of medical errors.

The NHRA conducts rigorous inspections to ensure that both public and private healthcare providers in Bahrain adhere to high health standards. To protect patient rights and reduce medical mishaps, the authority has implemented measures aimed at addressing complaints related to medical errors. However, it emphasized that the filing of a complaint does not automatically indicate a medical error, as determining whether an error has occurred requires the expertise of specialized technical groups.

The time taken to resolve complaints regarding medical errors can vary depending on the complexity of the case. Factors such as the need for additional checks requested by technical groups or judicial authorities can extend the timeline, sometimes spanning several months. The review process typically involves gathering medical records and reports from healthcare providers, as well as seeking expert opinions from consultants within the same medical specialty. In more complex cases, multiple opinions may be required before a final decision is reached.

The NHRA explained that, in some instances, medical records are sent for further review by a consultant, who then presents their findings to a selected committee for discussion. This review process may also involve input from other medical professionals before a final decision on whether a medical error has occurred is made. The authority emphasized the thoroughness and care taken during this examination to ensure that justice is served and patient rights are protected.

Overall, the NHRA’s response to concerns regarding medical errors in Bahrain’s healthcare system highlights the importance of upholding high health standards and addressing complaints effectively. By implementing measures to reduce mishaps and ensuring thorough review processes for complaints, the authority aims to protect patient rights and maintain the reliability and safety of healthcare services in the Kingdom. Through ongoing inspections and close collaboration with healthcare providers, the NHRA continues to work towards improving the quality of healthcare in Bahrain.
