In a recent development, His Excellency MP Dr. Maryam Al-Dhaen, Vice-Chairman of the Foreign Affairs, Defense and National Security Committee, praised the decision of His Excellency Lieutenant General Sheikh Rashid bin Abdullah Al Khalifa, Minister of the Interior, to form a committee that will review all cases of acquiring Bahraini citizenship since 2010. This decision is seen as a crucial step towards combating corruption and taking action against those who have obtained citizenship through fraudulent means such as providing incorrect information or submitting forged documents. Al-Dhaen highlighted the importance of this decision in upholding the law and ensuring the integrity of the citizenship acquisition process.

The Kingdom of Bahrain has a strong commitment to combating corruption in all its forms, thanks to the visionary leadership of His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa and the efforts of His Royal Highness Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Prime Minister. The Ministry of the Interior has been instrumental in uncovering cases of citizenship fraud through rigorous investigations and reviews conducted by the Nationality, Passports and Residence Affairs. The Minister of the Interior has been transparent in acknowledging the presence of individuals who have obtained citizenship unlawfully, and has shown a determination to take appropriate action.

It is essential for the government to establish controls and standards for granting Bahraini citizenship in order to maintain the honor of citizenship and ensure that it is only bestowed upon deserving individuals. The Bahraini Nationality Law, which dates back to 1963 with subsequent amendments, provides clear guidelines for withdrawing citizenship from individuals who have obtained it through fraud or false pretenses. While the government is not against granting citizenship to deserving individuals, it is imperative to take action against those who deceive the system.

The issue of granting citizenship is a matter of national importance and must be handled with care and diligence. Al-Dhaen expressed confidence in the Minister of the Interior’s commitment to appointing a committee of specialists who are known for their competence and integrity to review all cases of citizenship acquisition. The committee’s objective framework will ensure a thorough examination of each case to determine the accuracy of the data and documents presented.

The decision to review all cases of acquiring Bahraini citizenship from 2010 onwards is a proactive measure to ensure the accuracy of the information and documents and to take the necessary legal actions against those involved in fraudulent activities. The legislative authority will continue to support efforts to combat corruption through constitutional amendments and the enactment of laws that uphold integrity, transparency, and the rights of citizens. By safeguarding the citizenship acquisition process, Bahrain aims to support its comprehensive development renaissance and ensure the well-being of its citizens.
