A devastating fire in Kuwait City claimed the lives of 49 people and injured dozens more in a tragic incident that occurred on June 12, 2024. The fire broke out in a six-storey building in the Mangaf area, which is known to house many foreign workers, primarily from South and Southeast Asia. The interior ministry updated the death toll from an initial count of 35 to 49 after forensic teams combed through the charred remains of the building.

The blaze engulfed the lower floors of the building, with images on social media showing black smoke billowing out of the upper-storey windows. Many of the victims suffocated from the rising smoke after the fire started at the base of the building. The nationalities of the deceased have not been released yet, but India’s Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, expressed his condolences and offered assistance to those affected. The Indian embassy in Kuwait set up a helpline for updates, and India’s Minister of State for External Affairs was en route to coordinate assistance and repatriate the bodies of the deceased.

The building’s owner has been detained over suspected negligence, and the interior minister has vowed to take action against any properties found to be violating safety regulations. He also stated that measures would be taken to address issues of overcrowding and neglect of laborers in Kuwait. The tragic fire is considered one of the worst incidents of its kind in Kuwait’s history, a country located between Iraq and Saudi Arabia with a significant foreign worker population.

The Kuwaiti government is facing scrutiny over the safety regulations and living conditions for foreign workers in the country, with calls for stricter enforcement and oversight to prevent such tragedies from happening again. The incident has sparked an outpouring of condolences and support from the international community, with neighboring countries and global leaders expressing their sympathies for the victims and their families.

Efforts are being made to ensure that the survivors of the fire receive the necessary medical treatment and support, while steps are taken to prevent similar incidents in the future. The tragic loss of life in the fire highlights the importance of prioritizing safety measures and ensuring that all buildings and facilities adhere to proper regulations to protect the lives of residents and workers. As investigations continue into the cause of the fire, authorities are working to hold those responsible for any negligence to account and prevent such disasters from occurring again.
