Google on Thursday unveiled a revamped version of its research agent, Gemini Deep Research, powered by the new Gemini 3 Pro model. This update expands the tool’s capabilities beyond report generation, offering developers an API to integrate advanced research functionalities directly into their own applications. The move signals a broader industry shift toward agentic AI, where automated systems handle complex information gathering and analysis tasks.

The Rise of Agentic AI and Google’s New Research Agent

The newly released Gemini Deep Research agent is designed to process and synthesize large volumes of data, a capability increasingly vital in fields like due diligence and scientific investigation, according to Google. It’s built to handle extensive context within prompts, allowing for more nuanced and comprehensive inquiries. This contrasts with earlier large language models (LLMs) that struggled with maintaining coherence over longer interactions.

Expanding Access Through the Interactions API

A key component of this release is Google’s Interactions API. This API allows developers to leverage Gemini’s sophisticated research abilities within their own software, creating customized AI-powered solutions. The API provides greater control over the agent’s behavior and output, essential for building reliable and predictable applications. This is a significant step in democratizing access to powerful AI tools.

Google plans to integrate the Deep Research agent into several of its existing services, including Google Search, Google Finance, the Gemini app, and NotebookLM. This integration suggests a future where users rely on AI agents to perform searches and analyze information on their behalf, potentially altering the traditional search landscape. The company anticipates these integrations will roll out in the coming months.

Addressing AI Hallucinations and Benchmarking Performance

A persistent challenge in the development of LLMs is the tendency to “hallucinate” – to generate factually incorrect or nonsensical information. Google emphasizes that Gemini 3 Pro, and therefore Deep Research, is its “most factual” model to date, specifically trained to minimize these errors. This is particularly important for research agents, where inaccurate information can invalidate entire analyses.

To demonstrate the improvements, Google introduced DeepSearchQA, a new benchmark designed to evaluate agents on complex, multi-step information retrieval. The benchmark has been released as open source, encouraging wider scrutiny and contribution from the AI community. Additionally, Deep Research was tested against existing benchmarks like Humanity’s Last Exam and BrowserComp.

Results from Google’s testing showed Deep Research performing strongly, particularly on DeepSearchQA and Humanity’s Last Exam. However, OpenAI’s ChatGPT 5 Pro, also known as Garlic, proved a competitive rival, even slightly surpassing Google’s agent on the BrowserComp benchmark. These findings highlight the rapid pace of development in the field of AI.

OpenAI Responds with GPT-5.2 “Garlic”

Interestingly, Google’s announcement coincided with the release of OpenAI’s GPT-5.2, codenamed “Garlic.” OpenAI claims its new model outperforms competitors, including Google, on a range of standard benchmarks. The timing suggests a deliberate competitive response from both companies.

The release of GPT-5.2 “Garlic” underscores the ongoing rivalry between Google and OpenAI in the development of advanced AI models. Both companies are investing heavily in research and development, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with LLMs. This competition is likely to accelerate innovation and lead to more powerful and versatile AI tools.

The emergence of these advanced AI agents, like Gemini Deep Research and ChatGPT 5 Pro, is driving demand for robust evaluation metrics and benchmarks. The proliferation of benchmarks, while potentially confusing, is a positive sign, indicating a growing focus on objectively measuring AI performance. The field of natural language processing is rapidly evolving, and these tools represent a significant leap forward.

Looking ahead, the integration of these AI research capabilities into everyday tools like search engines and productivity applications is expected to continue. The success of these integrations will depend on the ability to maintain accuracy and reliability, as well as address concerns about bias and transparency. Further developments in model training and evaluation are crucial, and the industry will be closely watching for improvements in handling complex reasoning tasks and minimizing hallucinations in the coming year.
