Google is significantly investing in developing safe AI solutions, particularly focused on protecting vulnerable users in India. This commitment was highlighted by the company on Thursday, emphasizing that robust safety measures are paramount as Artificial Intelligence continues to evolve and become more integrated into daily life. Ahead of hosting the groundbreaking AI Impact Summit 2026 in New Delhi, Google detailed a comprehensive suite of initiatives designed to combat online fraud, bolster cybersecurity, and ensure AI technologies are inclusive and equitable, especially for India and the broader Global South.

Google’s Proactive Approach to Safe AI in India

The need for proactive measures is driven by the increasing sophistication of online threats. Digital arrest scams, screen-sharing fraud, and the emergence of convincing voice cloning technologies are posing significant risks to individuals. Google’s strategy centers around building defenses that are “faster than the scammer,” integrating protective measures directly into the technology people use every day. This isn’t simply about reacting to threats; it’s about anticipating and preventing them.

Real-Time Scam Detection & Financial Security

One key development is the rollout of real-time scam detection on Pixel phones. Powered by Gemini Nano, this feature analyzes suspicious calls directly on the device, crucially without recording audio, preserving user privacy. This on-device processing allows for immediate identification of potential scams.

Additionally, Google is collaborating with major payment platforms. A new pilot program with Google Pay, Navi, and Paytm will alert users if they attempt to open financial apps while screen-sharing with an unfamiliar contact. This provides a crucial warning and offers a one-tap exit option, preventing potential financial loss. Google Play Protect continues to be a vital line of defense, having blocked over 115 million attempted installations of high-risk apps sideloaded in India. Furthermore, Google Pay proactively issues over 1 million weekly warnings regarding potentially fraudulent transactions.

Strengthening Authentication with Enhanced Security

Google is also addressing vulnerabilities in authentication processes. The company is pioneering Enhanced Phone Number Verification, a system that replaces traditional SMS One-Time Passcodes (OTPs) with a more secure, SIM-based check. This significantly reduces the risk of SIM swapping and interception, bolstering the security of user sign-ins. This move towards stronger authentication is a critical step in building a more secure digital ecosystem.

Combating Deepfakes and Enhancing Cybersecurity

The rise of deepfakes presents a unique challenge, and Google is actively working to counter this threat. The company is expanding access to SynthID, its AI watermarking tool, to prominent Indian media organizations like PTI, Jagran, and India Today. SynthID allows for the creation of verifiable digital content, making it easier to identify and authenticate genuine media.

On the cybersecurity front, Google has introduced CodeMender, an innovative AI agent designed to autonomously identify and patch software vulnerabilities. This proactive approach to vulnerability management can significantly reduce the risk of cyberattacks and data breaches. This demonstrates Google’s commitment to not just protecting users from scams, but also safeguarding the broader digital infrastructure.

Investing in Digital Literacy and AI for the Global South

Recognizing that technology alone isn’t enough, Google is heavily investing in large-scale digital literacy programs. Initiatives like LEO (Learning Equality Online), Super Searchers, and the senior-focused DigiKavach campaigns are designed to equip millions of Indians with the skills to identify and avoid online risks. These programs are crucial for empowering individuals to navigate the digital world safely and confidently.

Through Google.org’s APAC Digital Futures Fund, the CyberPeace Foundation will receive USD 200,000 to further strengthen AI-driven cyber-defence tools. This funding will support the development of innovative solutions to address emerging cyber threats.

Google emphasizes that India’s unique scale and diversity make it a crucial testing ground for building safe AI solutions applicable to the Global South. The company is deepening its collaborations with institutions like IIT Madras and CeRAI to advance AI safety benchmarks, develop relevant datasets, and establish robust governance frameworks. This collaborative approach is essential for ensuring that artificial intelligence benefits everyone.

The AI Impact Summit 2026: A Global Stage for Responsible AI

The upcoming AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled for February 19-20 in New Delhi, is a testament to India’s growing importance in the global AI landscape. Announced at the France AI Action Summit, this will be the first-ever global AI summit hosted in the Global South. The summit will provide a platform for international collaboration and discussion on the responsible development and deployment of AI technology.

In conclusion, Google’s multifaceted approach to safe AI in India – encompassing technological innovation, strategic partnerships, and a strong focus on digital literacy – demonstrates a genuine commitment to protecting users and fostering a secure and inclusive digital future. The AI Impact Summit 2026 promises to further solidify India’s position as a leader in responsible AI development, shaping the future of this transformative technology for the benefit of all.
