Georgia’s voter turnout for the most pivotal parliamentary elections stood at 50.6 per cent by 5pm local time, as the country decides between the ruling Georgian Dream government and pro-European Union parties. With long queues at polling stations, the outcome will determine if Georgia moves towards EU membership or faces increased Russian influence. The ruling party faces opposition from four main parties, with voters electing 150 members to parliament through a proportional representation system.

In total, 3,508,294 registered Georgians can cast their ballots at 3,111 polling stations. By 5pm local time, voter turnout reached 50.6 per cent, higher than in 2020 but lower than the landmark 2012 election that brought the ruling party to power. Excluding expatriate voters, President Salome Zourabichvili expressed hope for a new Georgia, and opposition leaders emphasized the importance of choosing an European future. The use of electronic scanners at polling stations for the first time resulted in some technical difficulties, adding to the anticipation of the election results.

Polling stations are set to close at 8pm local time, with preliminary results expected shortly afterward. The Central Election Commission plans to announce final results on Sunday morning, providing a clear picture of the direction Georgia will take. The election marks a significant moment for the country, with leaders from various parties emphasizing the importance of the choice for freedom, stability, and a European path. As Georgians await the outcome, the anticipation is high for the potential shift in the country’s political landscape.

The election in Georgia has drawn significant attention as voters turn out to cast their ballots in what could be a defining moment for the nation. The ruling Georgian Dream government is facing a challenge from a coalition of pro-European Union parties, setting the stage for a potential shift in the country’s political direction. With voter turnout surpassing expectations and long queues forming at polling stations, the outcome of the election will determine Georgia’s path towards EU membership or increased Russian influence, highlighting the stakes at hand.

As the election process unfolds, President Salome Zourabichvili and opposition leaders have expressed their hopes for a new Georgia and emphasized the choice for a European future. The use of electronic scanners at polling stations introduced a new element to the voting process, contributing to the anticipation surrounding the outcome. With preliminary results expected shortly after polling stations close, and final results to be announced on Sunday morning, Georgians are eagerly awaiting the decision that will shape the country’s trajectory for years to come.

The significance of the election in Georgia is amplified by the turnout of voters and the high stakes involved. With four main opposition parties challenging the ruling government, the election has the potential to bring about a shift in power and direction for the nation. Leaders from various parties have underscored the importance of the choice for freedom, stability, and alignment with Europe, setting the stage for a transformative moment in Georgia’s political landscape. As the polls close and results are awaited, all eyes are on the outcome that will determine the country’s future course.
