Turkiye and Georgia made history at Euro 2024 by reaching the knockout phase of the tournament. Georgia secured their spot in the last 16 with a historic 2-0 win over Portugal in their first major international tournament appearance. Khvicha Kvaratskhelia opened the scoring early on, while Georges Mikautadze sealed the victory with a penalty. The Georgian team’s resolute defense held off Portugal’s attacks to secure their place in the knockout stage, where they will face Spain.

On the other hand, Turkiye advanced to the last 16 after a hard-fought 2-1 win against the Czech Republic. Vincenzo Montella’s team finished second in Group F behind Portugal to progress to the knockout phase. Despite the Czech Republic’s brave performance, a red card for Antonin Barak in the first half hindered their chances of progressing. The intense match between Turkiye and the Czech Republic saw a total of 18 yellow cards and numerous contentious incidents. Hakan Calhanoglu put Turkiye ahead with a goal in the second half, but Tomas Soucek equalized for the Czech Republic. In a frantic finale, Cenk Tosun sealed Turkiye’s victory on a counter-attack, ending the Czech Republic’s hopes of progressing. The match ended in chaos with fans running onto the pitch and red cards being shown after the final whistle.
