George Clooney and his wife Amal obtain French citizenship

Hollywood actor George Clooney and his wife, human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, have been granted French citizenship, along with their twins, Alexander and Ella. The naturalization was officially recorded in a gazette notice released Saturday, confirming the family’s adoption of French nationality. This move follows years of the Clooneys establishing a significant presence in France, particularly at their rural estate, and reflects a desire for a more private life for their children.

The Clooneys, who also maintain residences in the United States and England, reportedly sought French citizenship to shield their children from the intense scrutiny of the Hollywood spotlight. According to statements made by Clooney earlier this month, France offers a better environment for his children to experience a normal upbringing. The actor has previously expressed concerns about the pressures of fame on young people growing up in Los Angeles.

Why France? The Appeal of French Privacy Laws

The decision to become French citizens appears heavily influenced by France’s robust privacy protections. Unlike the United States, France has strict laws regarding the publication of personal images and information. It is illegal to photograph individuals in private places or to disclose sensitive details like home addresses without consent.

Celebrity Privacy in Practice

These laws are actively enforced, with celebrities often utilizing a counter-surveillance tactic. Litigation attorney Chassen Palmer detailed in a 2020 legal article that when paparazzi attempt to photograph celebrities during their personal time, security personnel or assistants will document the paparazzi’s actions. This evidence is then used to threaten civil damages if the images are published, effectively deterring intrusive photography.

This contrasts sharply with the often-unrestricted access paparazzi enjoy in the United States and other countries. Clooney has been vocal about his desire to protect his children from such attention, even penning an open letter in 2021 requesting media outlets refrain from publishing photos of his children for safety reasons.

Additionally, the Clooneys have invested significantly in a property in the French countryside. Clooney described a return to a simpler lifestyle, even learning to drive a tractor, as a positive aspect of living in France. He has stated that France offers the “best chance of a normal life” for his family.

The Process of Naturalization in France

French citizenship is typically granted after a period of residency, often five years, and requires demonstrating assimilation into French society. This includes proficiency in the French language and knowledge of French culture and values. The Ministry of Interior publishes quarterly lists of individuals newly naturalized as French citizens.

While the specific details of the Clooneys’ application process haven’t been publicly released, their established residency and Amal Clooney’s professional connections within the legal community likely facilitated a smooth application. The family’s commitment to the region, through property ownership and local engagement, may also have been considered favorably. The process of naturalization can vary based on individual circumstances and the applicant’s country of origin.

The Clooneys’ decision highlights a growing trend among high-profile individuals seeking greater privacy and a more stable environment for their families. This is particularly relevant given the increasing prevalence of social media and the constant demand for celebrity content. The move could also subtly influence perceptions of France as a desirable location for those prioritizing family life and personal space. The topic of expat life and choosing a country based on lifestyle factors is gaining traction.

It remains to be seen how the Clooneys will balance their international careers with their new French citizenship. While they maintain homes elsewhere, France is now their primary residence. Future developments will likely involve increased public appearances related to their French estate and potential involvement in local initiatives. The extent to which their presence will further elevate France’s profile as a haven for privacy and a desirable location for international families remains an open question.
