The Hurun India Rich List 2024, released recently, showcases significant shifts in the Indian wealth landscape, with Adani Group’s founder Gautam Adani taking the top spot with a wealth of Rs 11.6 lakh crore, leaving behind Mukesh Ambani of Reliance Industries Limited. The total wealth of Ambani and his family stands at Rs 10.1 lakh crore. The third spot on the list is held by the Shiv Nadar family, followed by Cyrus S Poonawalla and the family of Serum Institute of India, and Dilip Shanghvi of Sun Pharmaceutical Industries. Over the past five years, six individuals have consistently remained in the India Top 10, including Adani, Ambani, Nadar, Poonawalla, Hinduja, and Damani.

The total number of Indian billionaires has reached 334 individuals, with a collective wealth of Rs 159 lakh crore, exceeding the GDP of countries like Saudi Arabia and Switzerland and more than half of India’s GDP. The top 20 sectors have also seen new faces added to the list, reflecting the unstoppable spirit of Indian entrepreneurs driving growth across various industries. Start-up founders have also secured a place in the list, with 55 technology startup founders accumulating a total wealth of Rs 2,87,100 crore. The average age of these founders is 40, with the youngest being 21-year-old Kaivalya Vohra of Zepto.

The Hurun India Rich List 2024 features a total of 52 founders of 29 unicorns, highlighting India’s emergence as Asia’s wealth creation engine. While China saw a decline in its number of billionaires, India recorded a 29% increase, reaching a record 334 billionaires. For the first time, the list includes 1,539 entrants from various backgrounds, showcasing the diverse range of wealth creators in India – from family-run businesses to startup founders, private equity investors, angel investors, and more. Anas Rahman Junaid, Founder and Chief Researcher of Hurun India, believes that the stories within the list not only reflect the dynamics of India’s modern economy but also offer insight into its future trajectory, which he describes as nothing short of exciting.

The youngest self-made woman entrepreneur on the list is Neha Bansal, aged 42 and co-founder of Lenskart, an eyewear retail company. The co-founder of Zepto, the quick commerce startup, is 21-year-old Kaivalya Vohra, with a wealth of USD 5 billion. India’s rapid rise in billionaire numbers showcases the country’s potential as a wealth creation hub, with a diverse range of individuals contributing to its economic growth. The Hurun India Rich List 2024 captures the essence of India’s entrepreneurial spirit and offers a glimpse into the future trajectory of the country’s economy, which promises to be both dynamic and exciting.
