The 40th meeting of the United Nations’ High-level Group for Partnership, Coordination and Capacity-Building (HLG-PCCB) for statistics for the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has commenced at the General Authority for Statistics (GASTAT) headquarters in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The gathering brings together heads of national statistical offices and representatives from regional and international statistical organizations.

The meeting, which focuses on statistical data systems, is being held under the auspices of GASTAT, highlighting the organization’s growing role in supporting global statistical efforts. The event’s agenda includes discussions on enhancing international statistical system integration, developing national capacities, and exploring innovative statistical data uses.

Advancing Statistical Data Systems

GASTAT’s hosting of the HLG-PCCB meeting underscores its commitment to advancing statistical capabilities, according to the authority. The meeting’s discussions are expected to yield outcomes that enhance the production of accurate and reliable statistical data.

Additionally, GASTAT is preparing to host the 6th United Nations World Data Forum through the “Road to Riyadh” program, a year-long initiative that includes workshops and panel discussions at various levels. The program aims to facilitate knowledge exchange and strengthen partnerships among statistical institutions worldwide.

Statistical Innovation and Capacity-Building

The “Road to Riyadh” program is designed to ensure the sustainability and long-term impact of the forum’s outcomes, serving as a key platform for advancing global data and statistical systems. The initiative will feature the participation of experts and statistical institutions from around the world, focusing on cutting-edge statistical innovations and technologies.

Hosting the United Nations World Data Forum in Riyadh is significant, as it reflects the Kingdom’s growing leadership in advancing statistical systems and fostering international partnerships in the data field. The event is expected to promote the adoption of global best practices in statistical data systems.

Enhancing National Capacities

The meeting and the forthcoming forum are crucial for developing national capacities for producing high-quality statistical data. The discussions are likely to center on ways to enhance the use of innovative statistical data and improve international cooperation in the statistical domain.

According to GASTAT, the meetings will provide a platform for knowledge sharing and collaboration among national statistical offices and international organizations. The outcomes are expected to contribute to the advancement of statistical data systems globally.

As the meetings progress, the focus will be on the implementation of the decisions and recommendations made during the discussions. The next steps and expected outcomes will likely be shaped by the collaborations and agreements reached during the event.

The outcomes of the HLG-PCCB meeting and the preparations for the United Nations World Data Forum are expected to be closely watched by the statistical community. The success of these events will depend on the effective implementation of the agreed-upon measures and the continued collaboration among the participating organizations.
