Hessa Al Malek, a prominent figure in the UAE’s maritime sector, is currently serving as advisor to the Minister for Maritime Transport Affairs at the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure. As the first female leader in the Middle East’s maritime industry, she advocates for diverse talent to unlock the sector’s full potential. Her early years in Ras Al Khaimah were challenging, but she pursued her passion and became the first female urban and traffic planner in the UAE.

Al Malek’s career trajectory has seen her hold significant positions in the public works and transportation sector, including as the Highway Director and later as Undersecretary for Public Works. Her interest in the maritime sector began to flourish during her tenure at the Transportation Authority, leading her to lead the maritime sector in 2014. Her leadership has been instrumental in shaping maritime policies and positioning the UAE as a key player in the global landscape.

One of Al Malek’s significant achievements has been the renewal of maritime law in the UAE, leading to the country becoming a member of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO). She advocates for women in the maritime sector, promoting inclusivity and innovation. Despite challenges, such as the reliance on foreign companies for maritime services, Al Malek remains dedicated to fostering local talent and encouraging Emirati participation in the industry.

Initiatives are underway to promote maritime education and training, with a focus on attracting women and young professionals to the sector. Al Malek’s unwavering determination not only helps shape the future of maritime in the UAE but also inspires the next generation of leaders to navigate new waters. As the sector continues to evolve, the focus on local talent development and technological advancement will be critical in ensuring that the UAE remains at the forefront of the global maritime industry.
