Doha, Qatar – Residents of Qatar should prepare for a period of northwesterly winds and significantly cooler temperatures beginning Thursday, January 15, 2026, according to the Qatar Meteorology Department (QMD). The forecast indicates these conditions will persist through the start of the following week, potentially impacting both land and marine activities. The QMD has issued an early warning to allow citizens and residents time to prepare for the shift in weather.

The anticipated weather system will bring fresh to strong northwesterly winds across the country, leading to a noticeable temperature drop. While specific temperature predictions are still evolving, the QMD anticipates a particularly strong feeling of cold, especially during the weekend of January 17-18, 2026. This cooling trend follows a relatively mild winter period thus far in Qatar.

Preparing for Strong Northwesterly Winds in Qatar

The QMD report highlights that wind speeds are expected to fluctuate, with the strongest gusts likely occurring on Saturday and Sunday. These increased winds may stir up dust, leading to reduced visibility in some areas. Individuals with respiratory sensitivities should take precautions during these periods.

Impact on Marine Activities

Marine conditions will be substantially affected by the approaching weather system. The QMD forecasts rough seas throughout the duration of the event and has confirmed that marine warnings will remain in effect. Fishermen, small boat operators, and recreational sea-goers are strongly advised to exercise extreme caution and postpone non-essential trips.

Additionally, the rough seas could potentially disrupt shipping and port operations, though no specific disruptions have been announced at this time. The Ministry of Transport and Communications is likely monitoring the situation closely.

The forecast suggests temperatures will experience daily fluctuations, with the coolest conditions expected during nighttime and early morning hours. This diurnal temperature range is typical for winter weather in Qatar, but the overall drop will be more pronounced due to the northwesterly wind. The cooler temperatures may also impact outdoor construction and agricultural activities.

However, the strength and duration of the winds remain subject to change as the system develops. The QMD is utilizing advanced weather modeling to refine its predictions. The current forecast indicates the winds will originate from a high-pressure system developing over the northern Arabian Peninsula.

In contrast to the recent mild weather, this system represents a return to more typical winter conditions for Qatar. The country frequently experiences periods of strong northwesterly winds during the winter months, bringing cooler temperatures and occasionally dust storms. These winds are a key factor in the region’s climate.

The QMD will continue to issue updates on the evolving weather situation. Residents are encouraged to stay informed through official channels, including the QMD website (https://www.mme.gov.qa/en/) and social media accounts. Monitoring weather reports and heeding official warnings is crucial for ensuring safety during this period of potentially hazardous weather conditions.

Looking ahead, the QMD anticipates a gradual moderation of the winds and temperatures by the beginning of the following week. However, the exact timing and extent of this improvement remain uncertain. Further updates will be provided as the system progresses, and residents should continue to monitor the forecast for any changes to the expected temperature drop and wind speeds.
