The R&A Foundation has been supporting various golf-related programmes around the world since 2023 through a global philanthropy program. Donations generated from The Open have provided opportunities for individuals and communities to benefit from golf in areas such as accessibility, sustainability, health, heritage, and talent. So far, more than £6.3 million has been pledged by donors, with £2 million realized, with support from organizations like Rolex, The Arnold & Winnie Palmer Foundation, AIG, and individual donors.

The additional funds raised through the global philanthropy program have allowed The R&A Foundation to increase its support for individuals and communities worldwide through golf. With over £700,000 in unrestricted donations, the Foundation can now allocate funds to various projects that aim to transform lives and communities through golf. Projects such as The R&A World Golf Museum in St Andrews, greenkeeping initiatives, and the Community Golf Instructor Program are just some of the beneficiaries of the unrestricted funding.

Several programmes across the five themes of accessibility, sustainability, health, heritage, and talent are being supported by the R&A Foundation’s unrestricted funding in 2023. Initiatives include the creation of a ‘Fairways to Learning’ programme in Glasgow, the international roll-out of a Community Golf Instructor Programme, providing mental health support to elite golfers, promoting heritage through exhibitions, and supporting sustainability projects like First Green and international Scholars exchange program.

The R&A Foundation has also provided support to the Royal and Ancient Golf Club Scholarship, African High-Performance players, and the Women’s Amateur Asia-Pacific Academy to nurture young talent and provide opportunities for progression in the sport. With funding aimed at promoting sustainability and health, the Foundation is also focusing on research projects that measure the carbon sequestration potential of golf courses, the impact on biodiversity, and support for underrepresented groups in the greenkeeping profession.

By promoting initiatives like Thank a Greenkeeper Day and supporting the use of technology to enhance the sustainability of golf courses, The R&A Foundation is driving positive change in the golf industry. The funding provided by donors and the Foundation’s philanthropy program is playing a crucial role in advancing golf and creating opportunities for individuals to engage in the sport globally. The impact of the Foundation’s work is evident in the various projects that are being supported, aimed at transforming lives and communities through the game of golf.
