The rise of the far-right National Rally party in French polls has raised concerns about a rightward shift in the European Union. French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal recently warned that “Europe is mortal” as he campaigned for Valérie Hayer, the lead candidate of Emmanuel Macron’s Renaissance Party in the upcoming European elections. Attal emphasized the importance of the election in the face of serious threats to Europe, urging the French people to vote on 9 June.

With the far-right National Rally party leading the polls with over 30 percent of the vote, followed by Renaissance and the Socialists, there is a growing sense of urgency among political leaders. Macron, whose party is expected to capture around 16 percent of the vote, has called on voters to “wake up” to the threat posed by the far right. Attal highlighted the challenges facing the EU, including economic competition from the US and China, as well as the threat from Russia. He emphasized the need for the bloc to defend itself without relying on American assistance.

Hayer, in her campaign speech, focused on women’s rights, stressing the importance of standing up against those who seek to undermine them. She called on women to rally together for the sake of future generations, emphasizing the immense responsibility they carry. The upcoming European elections have become a battleground for competing visions of Europe’s future, with issues such as nationalism, populism, and gender equality taking center stage.

As the European Union grapples with these internal and external challenges, the outcome of the upcoming elections is poised to have far-reaching implications. The rise of far-right parties across Europe has sparked fears of a shift towards nationalism and protectionism, threatening the unity and stability of the EU. Macron’s appeal to voters to resist the far-right surge reflects the growing sense of urgency among pro-European leaders to confront these challenges head-on.

The European elections on 9 June will serve as a crucial test of the political climate in France and the broader EU. The success of the far-right National Rally party in the polls is a reflection of the growing dissatisfaction with the status quo and the perceived failure of traditional political parties to address pressing issues. The outcome of the elections will not only shape the future of Europe but also set the stage for a new chapter in the continent’s history.

In the face of rising nationalism and populism, the French people have been called upon to make their voices heard and stand up for the values that define Europe. The outcome of the elections will determine the direction the EU takes in the coming years, impacting issues such as economic cooperation, security, and social policy. As the political landscape in Europe continues to evolve, the stakes could not be higher for the future of the European project and the values it represents.
