Fisheries Development Oman (FDO) has recently commissioned the ADAMAS, a state-of-the-art fishing vessel, to its subsidiary, Oman Pelagic. This vessel, built in 2024 at the renowned Zamakona Shipyard in Spain, symbolizes FDO’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices and the economic growth of Oman’s fisheries sector. The ADAMAS, named after the Latin word for diamond, represents the strength and resilience of Omani seafarers throughout history, embodying the spirit of innovation and bravery that defines Oman’s maritime legacy.

The ADAMAS is equipped with advanced environmental instruments and software for data collection, ensuring operational efficiency and sustainability. Non-entangling fish aggregation devices made with biodegradable materials enhance selectivity and contribute to ecosystem conservation. With a cruise speed of 17 knots and a holding capacity of 1,200 tonnes, the ADAMAS is ideal for targeting various tuna species in international waters. The vessel’s propulsion system, powered by advanced engines, ensures efficiency and reliability while minimizing fuel consumption, even in harsh conditions.

Muneer Ali Al-Muniri, Chairman of Fisheries Development Oman, expressed that the ADAMAS represents a profound step forward in enhancing Oman’s fishing industry and maritime legacy in line with Oman Vision 2040. The vessel not only showcases FDO’s commitment to sustainable fishing practices but also reinforces Oman’s position as an attractive destination for investors seeking growth opportunities in the aquaculture sector. The ADAMAS’s design ensures operational efficiency, maximizes catch potential, and minimizes environmental impact, aligning perfectly with FDO’s core values.

The commissioning of the ADAMAS marks the completion of the first phase of FDO’s and Oman Pelagic’s expansion efforts in the fisheries sector. Subsequent phases will see further growth across various sectors involving seafood products, fishing ports, vessels, processing, and distribution. The introduction of ADAMAS alongside her sister vessel, Acila, marks a significant step forward in strengthening Oman’s commercial fishing fleet. By promoting sustainable fishing practices and landing high-quality tuna, Oman Pelagic and FDO aim to contribute to the blue economy and national food security.

Mirdas Al Rawahi, CFO of Oman Pelagic, emphasized the significance of the ADAMAS in honoring Oman’s maritime history and the resilience of its seafarers. The vessel offers specialized facilities for ultra-low temperature freezing and storage, ensuring the highest quality of tuna products. Registered at the International Classification Society for high seas navigation, the ADAMAS will operate in international waters, embodying Oman’s dedication to maintaining quality standards in the fishing industry. With the launch of the ADAMAS, FDO and Oman Pelagic take a significant step towards achieving sustainable growth and success in Oman’s fisheries sector.
