Argentina midfielder Enzo Fernandez has issued an apology for the racist chants made by Argentina players after winning the Copa America. FIFA announced that they are investigating the incident and strongly condemn any form of discrimination. The offensive chants were heard in a live video posted on social media by Fernandez from the team bus following the Copa victory over Colombia. Some players sang a chant that included racist insults targeting France’s star striker Kylian Mbappe.

Chelsea has taken action against Fernandez, launching an internal disciplinary procedure following the incident. Fernandez has publicly apologized, acknowledging the offensive language used in the song and expressing his stance against discrimination of any kind. The French Football Federation has also filed a complaint with FIFA regarding the chants, condemning the racist and discriminatory remarks made against players of the France team.

Argentina had beat France in the final of the 2022 World Cup, with the chants directed at Mbappe and others stemming from that victory. Chelsea Football Club released a statement stating that they find all discriminatory behavior unacceptable and will use this incident as an opportunity for education. Fernandez, who joined Chelsea from Benfica for a Premier League record fee, expressed regret for his involvement in the offensive chants and vowed to stand against discrimination.

The incident has sparked controversy and condemnation from various football organizations, with the focus on combatting racism and discrimination in the sport. The apology from Fernandez and the actions taken by Chelsea demonstrate a commitment to addressing and rectifying the situation. FIFA’s investigation into the matter will shed light on the extent of the issue and set a precedent for handling similar incidents in the future. It is crucial for players, clubs, and governing bodies to work together to promote inclusivity and respect within the football community.

The response to the racist chants highlights the ongoing challenge of combating discrimination and promoting equality in football. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of education and awareness in addressing issues of racism and discrimination within the sport. By holding individuals accountable and implementing disciplinary measures, football organizations can send a clear message that such behavior will not be tolerated. It is essential for players and clubs to uphold values of respect and diversity to ensure a welcoming and inclusive environment for all involved in the sport.
