If you’re looking to add a touch of festive spirit to your digital life, the newly updated Festivitas app for Apple devices delivers. Originally a macOS application focused on adding customizable holiday lights to desktops, Festivitas has expanded to include a version for iOS devices, bringing its signature sparkling aesthetic to iPhone and iPad Home Screens for the first time. This update offers a unique way to personalize your devices during the holiday season and beyond.

The core addition is a customizable widget for iOS, allowing users to display a string of holiday lights framing a chosen photo. Users can adjust the widget’s transparency to blend seamlessly with their device’s wallpaper. The app is available for free, with optional premium features unlocked through a one-time purchase ranging from $3.99 to $9.99, allowing users to choose a price point that suits them.

Festivitas App Brings Holiday Cheer to Apple Devices

Developer Simon Støvring has consistently refined Festivitas, focusing on thoughtful design and user experience. Unlike some seasonal apps that prioritize quick profits, Festivitas offers a polished and customizable experience. The app’s versatility extends beyond traditional holiday themes, offering a range of bulb shapes and color palettes for year-round personalization.

Customization Options Abound

Beyond simply turning the lights on, Festivitas provides granular control over their appearance. Users can adjust cable thickness, drop width, and height, and select from pre-defined color schemes like “Candy Cane” and “Winter Snow.” Alternatively, a custom color palette allows for complete creative freedom, adjusting hue and temperature to achieve the perfect look. The speed of the flashing lights is also adjustable.

The macOS version of Festivitas has also received updates, including a new snow effect. This feature allows users to add animated snowflakes to their desktop, with customizable settings for flake size, fall speed, wind, and layering – choosing whether the snow falls over all screen elements or just the desktop background.

Adding to the interactive experience, both the lights and snow effects respond to mouse movement. The snow will be repelled by the cursor, while the lights will lift and drop, potentially revealing browser tabs underneath. This feature can be disabled for users who prefer a static display.

Leveraging Automation with Shortcuts

For more advanced users, Festivitas integrates with Apple’s Shortcuts app. This integration enables automation of the lights and snow effects, triggered by various events. For example, the snow could automatically activate based on the daily weather forecast, or the lights could synchronize with music playback. This level of control adds significant utility to the app’s aesthetic features.

The app’s expanded functionality, including non-holiday bulb shapes like bats, clovers, and even a “WWDC” bulb, demonstrates a commitment to providing a year-round personalization tool. This differentiates Festivitas from other seasonal applications that may only be relevant for a limited time. The availability of iOS widgets expands the app’s reach to a wider audience, capitalizing on the growing trend of Home Screen customization.

While numerous apps offer holiday themes and widgets, Festivitas stands out due to its unique aesthetic and depth of customization. The app’s focus on visual detail and interactive elements provides a more engaging experience than many competitors. Users interested in Shortcuts automation will find additional value in the app’s integration capabilities.

Looking ahead, the developer has indicated a continued focus on refining the existing features and exploring new possibilities for personalization. Future updates may include additional bulb shapes, expanded Shortcuts integration, and further optimization for both macOS and iOS platforms. The long-term success of Festivitas will likely depend on maintaining its commitment to quality design and responsiveness to user feedback, especially as the iOS widget ecosystem continues to evolve. The next major release is anticipated to coincide with the launch of iOS 18 and macOS 15, though a specific timeline remains uncertain.
