Extensive security operation underway in Paris ahead of Olympics

The Paris Olympics have implemented an extensive security plan to ensure the safety of athletes and visitors during the upcoming Games. Around 45,000 police and gendarmes, along with 10,000 soldiers, have been deployed to provide security for the event. Military patrols armed with assault rifles have become a common sight in crowded places in France since the attacks by extremist groups in 2015. The military presence in Paris aims to deter potential attackers and ensure a swift response to any security threats that may arise.

Additionally, aerial surveillance measures such as Rafale fighter jets, surveillance drones, and helicopters equipped with sharpshooters have been put in place to monitor the skies over Paris during the Games. A no-fly zone will be enforced around the capital during the opening ceremony to prevent unauthorized aircraft from entering the airspace. These comprehensive security measures are designed to protect the city and its residents from potential threats during the Olympics.

In addition to physical security measures, the organizers of the Paris Games are also prepared for potential disinformation campaigns aimed at disrupting the event. The International Olympic Committee has implemented AI-powered surveillance systems to flag potential security risks, such as abandoned packages or crowd surges. While these measures are intended to enhance security, some groups have raised concerns about the impact on privacy and civil liberties, particularly for those who spend a lot of time in public spaces.

Surveillance measures have also been extended to individuals involved in the Games, including ticket holders, workers, and applicants for security passes. More than 3,900 people have been blocked from attending the Games due to suspected security concerns, including issues related to Islamic radicalization, political extremism, and criminal records. Russian and Belarusian citizens have been subject to particular scrutiny, although no direct link to security threats has been established.

Overall, the security preparations for the Paris Olympics are among the most extensive in the history of the Games, reflecting the ongoing threats posed by extremist groups and the need to ensure the safety of participants and spectators. The organizers have taken a proactive approach to security, with a focus on prevention and rapid response to any potential security incidents. While the presence of armed military personnel and surveillance systems may be jarring for some visitors, these measures are essential to safeguarding the event and maintaining public safety during the Games.
