Doha, Qatar – Qatar Foundation (QF) is set to open Lawh Wa Qalam: M. F. Husain Museum to the public on November 28th, marking a significant addition to Qatar’s growing arts and cultural scene. The museum will celebrate the life and extensive work of Maqbool Fida Husain, one of the most influential modern artists of the 20th century, and aims to foster a dynamic space for learning and artistic exploration within Education City.

Located in the heart of Education City, the museum is designed to be accessible to a wide audience, including families, students, and international art enthusiasts. The opening underscores Qatar’s commitment to becoming a regional and global hub for culture and creativity, according to Qatar Foundation officials.

Celebrating M. F. Husain’s Legacy Through Lawh Wa Qalam

The M. F. Husain Museum will house a comprehensive collection of the artist’s later works, many of which are inspired by themes from Arab civilization and Islamic culture. Notably, it will feature Husain’s final masterpiece, Seeroo fi al ardh, providing visitors with a unique insight into his artistic vision and multidisciplinary approach. The museum’s building itself was inspired by a sketch created by Husain and brought to life by architect Martand Khosla.

A Hub for Interdisciplinary Learning

Beyond showcasing Husain’s artwork, the museum is envisioned as a catalyst for dialogue and discovery. Qatar Foundation intends for the space to host workshops, conversations, and artistic programs, fostering interdisciplinary encounters between students and professionals across various fields. This aligns with Education City’s core mission of encouraging collaboration between design, engineering, science, medicine, and the arts.

Syeda Deeba, an Interior Design student at Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts in Qatar (VCUarts Qatar), a QF partner university, expressed her enthusiasm for the museum’s opening. She believes it will enrich Qatar’s cultural landscape and provide valuable opportunities for young designers and artists to study the intersection of art, space, and culture. Deeba also highlighted the importance of QF and VCUarts Qatar in providing pathways for creative students through facilities, mentorship, and access to cultural institutions.

Jowaher Al Marri, Manager of Communications Outreach at Qatar Foundation, emphasized that the museum embodies the spirit of Education City – a place where curiosity is encouraged and lifelong learning is prioritized. She stated that the museum reinforces Qatar’s position as a cultural center, inviting exploration of ideas that inspire and unite.

However, the museum’s impact extends beyond the immediate artistic community. The presence of a dedicated space for a major global artist is expected to encourage cross-campus interactions, joint projects, and a broader cultural exploration among students from all disciplines within Education City. This collaborative environment is seen as crucial for fostering innovation and preparing future leaders.

Additionally, the museum complements existing cultural offerings within Qatar Foundation’s ecosystem, including its schools, universities, research centers, and community initiatives. This integrated approach aims to create a natural environment for learning and collaboration, enriching the overall experience for residents and visitors alike. The development of cultural infrastructure is a key component of Qatar’s National Vision 2030, which prioritizes investment in human capital and a knowledge-based economy.

Looking ahead, Qatar Foundation will monitor the museum’s impact on the community and assess the potential for expanding its programming and outreach. The success of Lawh Wa Qalam will likely inform future cultural initiatives within Education City and contribute to Qatar’s ongoing efforts to establish itself as a leading destination for arts and culture. Further details regarding specific workshops and events are expected to be announced in the coming weeks.
