The president of the Union of Arab Chambers, Sameer Abdullah Naas, stated that about 40 per cent of jobs worldwide, particularly back-office positions, could be replaced by artificial intelligence. He highlighted the fact that employers and employees are increasingly embracing new technologies in the workplace, with many businesses utilizing the internet for marketing and selling products efficiently. Naas noted that the challenges associated with new technologies include the potential for AI to eliminate a significant number of back-office jobs.

Back-office roles typically involve administrative tasks such as accounting, record-keeping, data entry, HR, office management, IT support, and operations-related services. Naas emphasized the importance of retraining the workforce to address potential job losses due to automation. He called for educational institutions to prepare young people for the future of work in the age of AI by updating curriculum and providing relevant training.

Naas emphasized the need for public-private sector collaboration to tackle the challenges arising from accelerated digital transformation. He highlighted the importance of governments getting involved and implementing solutions in partnership with the private sector. The Annual Investment Meeting (AIM) Congress 2024 in Abu Dhabi brought together industry leaders, policymakers, investors, entrepreneurs, and experts to explore innovative strategies and opportunities for economic growth and prosperity.

The AIM Congress, supported by the UAE Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology and the Abu Dhabi Department of Economic Development, aims to facilitate discussions on emerging trends in the global economy and provide a platform for sharing knowledge and expertise. The event underscores the importance of adaptation and retraining in response to the increasing prevalence of AI in the workforce. Naas’s insights shed light on the evolving nature of work and the challenges and opportunities that come with technological advancements.

In conclusion, the rise of artificial intelligence presents both challenges and opportunities for the workforce. As AI continues to reshape industries and automate tasks, there is a growing need for retraining and upskilling to ensure that individuals remain employable in the changing job market. By fostering collaboration between the public and private sectors and investing in education and training programs, countries can better prepare their workforce for the future of work. The AIM Congress serves as a platform for discussing these issues and identifying strategies for sustainable economic growth in the digital age.
