Former Australia Test opener Joe Burns has made a bold decision to switch his allegiance to Italy in order to help the team qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup. This move comes as a tribute to his late brother and as a way for Burns to find strength and solace during a difficult time. Burns, who recently lost his brother in February and was left out of Queensland’s state contracts list, is looking to honor his family’s heritage by representing Italy on the cricket field.

In a heartfelt social media post, Burns shared a picture of a blue Italy shirt with the number 85, the same number his brother wore at his amateur cricket club in Queensland. He expressed his deep emotions by stating, “While a part of my soul feels like it will always be missing, I know this shirt will carry on his spirit and give me strength.” This decision reflects Burns’ admiration for his grandparents who migrated from Italy to Australia, showcasing bravery and resilience through adversity.

Italy, who have never participated in a World Cup event, finished third in European qualifying, narrowly missing out on the upcoming T20 World Cup in the United States and the Caribbean. However, Burns remains optimistic and determined to represent Italy in the 2026 World Cup, scheduled to take place in India and Sri Lanka. He recognizes the challenges ahead but is proud to embark on this journey with the Italian team and hopes to make his family proud.

Europe’s top two finishers, Scotland and Ireland, have secured their spots in the 20-team tournament that kicks off this weekend. Italy will have another opportunity to qualify at a sub-regional tournament in Rome next month. Burns, despite the physical distance from his familiar cricket grounds in Australia, expresses a sense of coming home and is eager to contribute to Italy’s cricketing journey.

With a new chapter in his cricketing career, Joe Burns is embracing the opportunity to represent Italy and contribute to their T20 World Cup ambitions. His decision goes beyond the sport, serving as a tribute to his late brother and a celebration of his family heritage. As Italy prepares for the upcoming qualifying tournament, Burns is focused on giving his best on the field and making a meaningful impact in the team’s journey towards the 2026 World Cup. Although the path may be challenging, Burns’ commitment and determination shine through as he looks forward to a new chapter in his cricketing journey.
