The 7 October Hamas incursion into southern Israel resulted in more than 1,000 deaths and triggered a year-long war that has left much of the Gaza Strip in ruins. European leaders have expressed their early reactions to the first anniversary of the incursion, condemning Hamas attacks that killed 1,200 Israelis and took 250 others hostage as examples of unspeakable savagery. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen called for a ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of the remaining hostages held by Hamas. She also highlighted the dire humanitarian situation in Gaza and pledged to continue providing financial assistance and humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

The ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas has resulted in a significant loss of life, with over 41,000 Palestinians killed in Gaza over the past year. The Hamas-run health ministry does not differentiate between civilians and combatants in its count of casualties. German Chancellor Olaf Scholz expressed regret over the suffering and deaths on both sides of the conflict and called for a ceasefire to protect the civilian population in Gaza. Pope Francis prayed for peace and condemned the violence and hatred fueling the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas in a ceremony at the Papal Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.

Israel announced a new air and ground offensive in Jabaliya, northern Gaza, on Sunday, targeting the site of a refugee camp dating back to the 1948 war. The Israeli military called for the complete evacuation of northern Gaza, prompting thousands of people to flee the area, leaving behind their belongings and seeking safety in the south. Palestinian authorities reported heavy Israeli strikes in Gaza on Sunday, resulting in the deaths of at least 19 people in an attack on a central mosque. Meanwhile, Israeli authorities have heightened security measures in anticipation of potential attacks and are preparing to hold memorials for the victims of the 7 October Hamas attacks.

The European Union has condemned the Hamas incursion into Israel and the ensuing conflict that has devastated Gaza, calling for a ceasefire and the release of hostages still held by Hamas. European leaders have expressed their commitment to providing financial assistance and humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people and have urged for an end to the violence and bloodshed. The ongoing conflict in Gaza has caused immense suffering on both sides, with thousands of lives lost and millions displaced from their homes. The international community continues to call for peace and stability in the region, while efforts are being made to address the humanitarian crisis unfolding in Gaza.
