The three-time champions Spain edged past a spirited Georgia team with a 4-1 victory to secure a spot in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024. The match ended the fairytale run of the underdog Georgia team, who had caused an initial scare by taking the lead in the 18th minute with an own goal by Robin Le Normand. Despite the early setback, Spain showcased their dominance and resilience by securing goals from Rodri, Fabian Ruiz, Nico Williams, and Dani Olmo.

Spain’s performance in the group stage, where they had a perfect record with three wins and no goals conceded, set the stage for their impressive display against Georgia. Coach Luis de la Fuente reinforced his starting lineup with the first-choice players after making 10 changes in the final group game. On the other hand, Georgia entered the match full of confidence following their surprising victory over Portugal in the knockout rounds, aiming for another upset against Spain.

The encounter was intense from the start, with Spain creating several scoring opportunities early on. Dani Carvajal and Pedri tested Georgia’s goalkeeper, Giorgi Mamardashvili, in the opening minutes. Despite Georgia taking the lead with an own goal, Spain remained composed and equalized through Rodri’s goal in the 39th minute. Fabian Ruiz put Spain ahead 2-1 with a header six minutes into the second half, showcasing the team’s attacking prowess and determination.

Nico Williams extended Spain’s lead in the 75th minute with a well-taken strike, effectively ending any hopes of a Georgia comeback. Substitute Dani Olmo further solidified Spain’s victory with a goal in the closing minutes of the match. The victory sets up a quarter-final clash between Spain and hosts Germany, promising an exciting match between two powerhouse teams in the tournament. Overall, Spain’s performance against Georgia demonstrated their strength and resilience, positioning them as strong contenders for the Euro 2024 title.
