The Netherlands secured a narrow 2-1 victory over Poland at Euro 2024, with coach Ronald Koeman admitting that his side was fortunate not to be punished for squandered chances. Despite trailing early on to Adam Buksa’s header, Cody Gakpo equalized in the 29th minute before substitute Wout Weghorst netted the winning goal in the 83rd minute. Koeman acknowledged that his team should have capitalized on more opportunities but expressed confidence in their overall performance.

Koeman highlighted the Oranje’s strong display leading up to the tournament, with convincing victories over Canada and Iceland in pre-tournament friendlies. Despite missing several chances against Poland, Koeman remained optimistic about his team’s chances of securing the Netherlands’ first major trophy since Euro 1988. He emphasized the importance of not dwelling on missed opportunities and focusing on the team’s strengths moving forward in the competition.

The Netherlands’ next challenge will be a showdown against title favorites France, followed by a clash with Austria to round off their Group D campaign. The Dutch will look to build on their performance against Poland and secure positive results in their upcoming matches. With Weghorst making an impact off the bench and promising displays from Frimpong and Malen, Koeman has options to consider for the starting lineup against France.

Having lost twice to France in qualifying, including a 4-0 defeat in Paris, the Netherlands are aware of the tough task ahead. Gakpo acknowledged the difference in quality between Poland and France, emphasizing the need to adapt to a different style of play. The team’s focus will be on overcoming the challenge posed by France and securing a vital victory in their quest for success at Euro 2024.

The support of Netherlands fans has been crucial, with thousands traveling to Germany to cheer on the team in their opening match. Gakpo acknowledged the fans’ presence and the boost they provide during difficult moments on the field. With the backing of passionate supporters, the team aims to overcome obstacles and achieve their goals in the tournament. Despite facing tough opposition, the Netherlands remain determined to make an impact and showcase their capabilities on the European stage.
